While direct blows to the knee will happen, the knee is more likely to suffer an injury when you twist or over stretch you the knee joint. These movements can exceed the knee's range of motion limits and as a result, the injury can occur without outside contact.

If your knee is stressed too much in any direction, then the ligaments that work to hold the knee in place can tear. When you have a ligament stretch or tear, this is referred to as a sprain. These are all classified as being a first, second, or third degree sprain.

Injuries to the muscles and tendons in the knee area can be caused by excessive flexion or extension to the knee. This excessive flexion or extension is technically referred to as acute hyperflexion or hyperextension of the knee joint. Moreover, injuries to the muscles and tendons can be caused by overuse as well these particular movements. These types of injuries, to the muscles and tendons are referred to as strains.

Bursa Injuries : When the bursas in your knee become inflammed this is known as bursitis. This can occur when there is a chronic overuse of the bursa. There can be inflammation of the bursa due to a direct blow as well.

Acute Injuries

1.) These types of injuries can either have immediate swelling in the knee joint. In addition, the joint can suffer making it hard to bend the knee or even to bear weight.

2.) The second type of acute injury usually has discomfort and pain that is localized to one side of the knee, with little swelling and minimal effects on walking.
