Many of us would like to earn money from home. The good news is that the internet provided us with numerous options to earn a living from the comfort of our homes. As you will discover as soon as you start searching, the problem is not the availability of work-from-home or earn-an-income-online offers. The problem is that there are too many of them, some promising you thousands of Rands (or dollars, as the case may be) for no effort at all.

How do you distinguish genuine online money-making opportunities from time-wasters or even scams? Well, there are no short-cuts. You need to invest a lot of research and garnish it with some experience in order to be able to distinguish the wheat from the chaff.

The first rule of thumb is: exercise utmost caution when confronted with offers that promise the most money in the shortest period of time with the least effort. Even better, ignore them altogether. At best, you will be only wasting your time.

After you disqualify the most obvious tosh, it is time to take a closer look at the remaining options. Focus on about half a dozen options that suit you best. Then learn as much as you can about them before giving any of them a try. Who stands behind the programme? Is it a trustworthy organization or individual, with a name and contact details, or some elusive entity that does a praise-worthy job of concealing its true identity? Are there any hidden charges for joining or participating? That is an absolute no-no. Another one is asking you to buy a fool-proof big-money-making scheme, without giving you the slightest clue about how you'll make all that money.

By all means read all the reviews available on the 'net, but take them with a grain of salt. Many positive reviews are positive only because the people who wrote them stand to benefit from your clicking on the link and joining the programme.

So, what happens when, after a rigorous investigation, you finally select two or three genuine online money-making programmes? More likely than not, you will discover: - that you need to put in a lot of work; - that the earnings are low... very low; - that you may not be able to cash in even those meagre earnings if the programme you joined pays through channels unavailable in South Africa, like PayPal.

For many people, selling goods on online marketplaces is the best chance of earning some extra cash, or even a regular income. Since one usually swims better in the waters one knows, you may want to consider joining a local online marketplace, on which you can trade in your own currency. For South Africans, that would be Rands.

Look for a marketplace that has a respectable number of users and lots of categories populated by an abundance of items. That is the marketplace where the buyers are, and that is the marketplace where you want to be.

It is very easy to make money on an online marketplace in terms of ease of joining; in terms of ease of listing items for sale; in terms of ease of reaching a vast customer base; in terms of ease of collecting payments from the buyers. It is also plain old-fashioned hard work in terms of procuring the items that will sell at a profit; in terms of matching or bettering the competitors; in terms of packing and dispatching the items sold; in terms of offering impeccable service to your customers.

In reality, the most successful online sellers will probably tell you that they are busy with this or that aspect of their online venture practically every waking moment. They will probably also tell you that they relish it, because they are doing what they love, and they are doing it for themselves.

If you are not yet ready for such strenuous commitment, you may find that selling from time to time can also be financially rewarding and help you pay your petrol bill or afford a luxury or two in these economically taxing times.

bidorbuy.co.za is South Africa's largest online marketplace. Buyers and sellers come to bidorbuy to buy and sell virtually anything in auction format or at fixed prices. Contact details: bidorbuy Marketing Department; email promotion@bidorbuy.co.za, web site www.bidorbuy.co.za
