Burned out, stressed out, under achieving people are not happy people. Unhappy people are not productive people. When you put those four qualities together, you are talking about the vast majority of the people out there. Not only are we talking about the vast majority of people, we are talking about those people having these qualities, not occasionally, not once in a while but as a way of life. That is truly a sad situation to be in. These people are chronic suffers; they experience these feelings and live daily with these traits. I am not suggesting they have to, just stating the reality of the situation.

You can decide where on the spectrum you sit. Do you see yourself in this group? If you experience some or all of these traits, then you should pay attention to the amount of white space you see each day. What is white space? White space is the space you see in your Day Planner where there is no work scheduled, no specific activities scheduled that could be seen to be business or professional activities. Basically, white space is time where you can relax, unwind, re charge your batteries.

I know, you are busy, behind, have too much to do, will never get caught up, just do not have the "time" to sit on you butt and do nothing. Wrong is the simplest way to say it. It is the exact opposite that is true. If you want to really get caught up, stop being behind, want to get more done, then you MUST get some white space in your Day Planner. I used to think like you, used to be behind all the time, never had the "time" to take days off, let alone vacations, until I found out that I was not as indestructible as I thought I was and I was in fact sliding backwards, regardless of how hard I worked. It was time to think and not react. It was time to drive my own agenda; the real agenda that would get me ahead and would help me reach my goals.

There are many kinds of white space and each one offers you something new. White space can be business related and you have to learn how to use it to your advantage. I will deal with just one specific here.

Use White Space to Actually Think

When was the last time you took time out of your day to actually think? Some people will be offended by that question; others will instantly see where I'm coming from. Thinking, unfortunately, is a very under worked activity these days. It falls into the category that I'm too busy to actually take time out during the day to just think, I'm too busy doing, to think. When you break it down like that, it's absurd. The one process that will lead us out of the chaos and give us some direction and focus, we regulate it to the back seat, an afterthought if we deem it important at all.

You use white space to spend some time during the day to give some real hard focused thought to what you are doing and how it's going. You push back from your desk, or your machine, from your computer and you disengage. You then push everything out of your mind, stop the distractions, and think. If you are saying that you are not able to do that simple exercise, then be prepared to accept mediocrity for the rest of your life. That is the fate that awaits you.

Mediocrity is accepting less than what your full potential could be. You could be making $100,000 a year, have a nice house, the toys that goes with that lifestyle, if you could be making $250,000 an year, and then you are accepting mediocrity with the 100K. It's your choice. Only you can decide what is right for you, what you really want to achieve in life and then go out and get it. You have the tools here to help you reach your full potential, all you have to decide is if you want to use them.
