It may be difficult to believe, but back in the day cell phones were purely functional pieces of technology. Their sole purpose was to keep you in touch with others as you traveled and when you were away from your regular landline phone.

Just as computers evolved into multi-functional entertainment providers and productivity tools, so the cell phone has matured. Today, these phones have built in games, specialized applications that would make your mind boggle and cell phone ring tones seem to cover the entire musical spectrum.

Some people wonder how cell phone ring tones actually work. A ringtone itself is basically a computer program, stored within the cell phone's memory chip. The program interacts with the phone's brain or microprocessor to provide output to the speaker system whenever an incoming call is received.

The ringing tone text transfer language, also known as RTTTL, tells the microprocessor how to vibrate speaker frequencies to produce particular tones. A variation in the order and speed of these vibrations can cause an infinite number of ring tones.

There are basically three ways to install a new ring tone to your phone's memory. There are many thousands of available ring tones, which you can purchase commercially and dozens of ring tone sites available on the Internet. The majority of sites charge a small amount of money for the ring tones, covering the royalty due to the artist.

The first way that you can acquire cell phone ring tones is to load the tone through an infrared capability or via a data link, through a data cable. You will need to ensure that your computer configuration is correct and that you have the required software - which is often downloadable - to establish the links and initiate the transfer.

The most popular way to acquire cell phone ring tones is to simply get the tone sent to your phone. Short message or enhanced message service technology is used to send your phone an adapted text message containing the program for your new ring tone.

This is becoming more popular since smart messaging - or SMS - arrived on the scene, which handles non-text information such as a graphic or a ring tone, during transfer.

If your device is specially equipped, you can add cell phone ring tones by entering a specific key press sequence. Your phone must be enabled and you must enter a given sequence of numbers in the correct format. This is the least popular method of finding ring tones.

Technology never stands still and newer, richer and more harmonic cell phone ring tones are available for phones that have polyphonic ringtone capability. Simply put, polyphonic capability enables your phone to play more than one note at a time.

As phones can now be programmed to sound a variety of different ring tones according to different circumstances and callers, so the options will increase. Cell phone ring tones have quickly involved from dull, repetitive and often quite annoying flat tones to creative, harmonic and pleasant alternatives.
