When you consider wireless cellular phone plans, there are several fundamentals that you need to bear in mind. Not every plan is created equal, nor is every provider and if you are even thinking about going overseas for your next vacation, you'd better pay attention!

The first thing to bear in mind is that there are different types of phone network and different types of radio frequency. Wireless communication requires that we send data via radio frequencies and there are a number of established national bands. If you are only planning to use your phone within North America this does not concern you too much, otherwise you should know that there are two radio frequencies in North America and two separate radio frequencies in most of the rest of the world. You need to be sure that your phone will "talk" within the frequencies.

Wireless cellular phone plans are available within different networks. By far the most dominant is the GSM network, although you may be surprised to learn that the CDMA network has more subscribers in the US. Only two of the major service providers - T-Mobile and AT&T - operate within the GSM network. For flexibility and portability, especially abroad, you are advised to go with the GSM network.

GSM phones are distinguished from others through their use of the SIM, a miniature computer card that stores your personal information and phone lists. The SIM card can be removed from one unit and put into another, in many cases with no problem. However, some cell service providers, being interested in their bottom line, will "lock" their particular phones so that they can only be used with the SIM card that they provide. You should know that it is possible to unlock these phones even if the provider does not want you to do so.

The most modern type of cell phone is what's called a quad-band phone. This means that it will work on any of the four major radio frequencies. It follows therefore that a quad band GSM phone is the most flexible type of unit that you can have and can generally be made to work anywhere.

As technology is now arising which will translate your voice into data that can be transmitted via the Internet, or VoIP technology, more options and additional flexibility are emerging. Wireless cellular phone plans will in the near future feature enhanced connectivity, interchangeability and will likely come with few of the traditional restrictions imposed by the marquee carriers.

It is important to understand the technological differences and the significant variations between the wireless cellular phone plans now available. Understand your requirements before committing to your future needs.
