Choosing the right product to sell is crucial for a drop shipping business to succeed. Since you will be marketing online, you can expect tough competition. To survive the industry, you must recognize your target market and offer them exactly what they want and need.
If you are planning to start a drop shipping business, below are tips on how to choose the right products to sell:
Identify products with "large market demand". First, you need to determine which products are greatly in demand by the market. Pick out an item that consumers are enthusiastic about. How?
Visit different online shopping sites and check out the most popular items in customers' wish lists. eBay is a leading buy & sell website that is definitely worth checking out to search for "hot picks" in the market.
You can also investigate further by visiting forums and social sites to find out what people are really interested about. Another way is to use Keyword Search Tools to find out what specific products people are looking for when they search the web.
Do a self-check. It is also a good idea to ask yourself, "Which product am I most inclined to actually buy online?" If you had the budget, what products will you personally order online, rather than go out and purchase from a regular store?
Ask the people you know. Your immediate family, relatives and friends can also help you out. Ask them what they have bought over the internet within the past week or month. What item do they plan to purchase online the next time they have the budget?
Identify your niche market. After doing some research, you should already have a couple of "highly in-demand products" on your list. The next question is, what does your niche market want?
Generally, people shop online to find items that they cannot readily buy from a nearby shop. Thus, instead of going through the hassle of driving long distance to make the purchase, they opt to shop online. Once you identified the product that you can sell in your niche market, you are ready for the next step.
Consider feasibility. Obviously, you want to start a dropship business to make money. Therefore, seriously consider the market feasibility of your chosen product. Can you find a Wholesale Supplier who is willing to dropship that particular item? How much can you mark up from the wholesale price? Can you realistically make a good profit for each sale, taking into account all your costs? These are important questions that you need to find the answers to before making a final decision.
Find a legitimate Dropship Supplier. After conducting your market research and feasibility studies, it is crucial that you find a legitimate and trusted Supplier. One good tip is that genuine wholesale suppliers do not work with merchants who are not licensed or cannot provide a Business Tax ID Number. If a certain "dropshipper" offers to give you an account without requiring your business permit and tax information, you are most likely dealing with a scammer or a middleman.
Another thing to remember is that you should never be required to pay a significant upfront payment just to open an account with the Wholesale Supplier. You should only be billed after you have made a sale of the product from your website.
