As with the treatment of similar cancers, breast cancer treatment aims to keep safe the healthy tissue while simultaneously killing the cancerous tumor at its point of origination and any other cancers that may have spread to other parts of the body. With great thanks and gratitude to researchers and medical professionals, patients suffering from breast cancer now have more options for effective treatment. Of course these options depend on several factors concerning the type, stage, and size of the tumor found. Health professionals attribute this to ground breaking research, education of the general public, and early detection initiatives.

Breast Cancer has over the years become more and more treatable and the survival rates have increased dramatically. Some of the breast cancer treatment options that are more common include surgery. Many patients undergo surgery for removal of cancerous tissues in the breast removing lymph nodes and radiation treatments to kill any remaining or spreading cancerous cells. Usually used in addition to surgery but considered a second for m of treatment because it can be used alone is radiation therapy which is non-surgical. Using penetrating high-energy waves (x-rays/gamma rays), radiation emits from these beams destroying tumor cells by breaking down their genetic material totally eliminating their ability to continue to grow.

Then there is the most widely recognized breast cancer treatment that has placed fear in the hearts of most patients because of its side effects, chemotherapy. Chemo treatment stops the growth of cancer cells by preventing the cells from dividing. Drugs can be taken orally or by injection each depending on the stage of the cancer being treated. Widely known are the side effects of hair loss, vomiting and nausea, extreme fatigue, and other very undesirable side effects. Despite the uncomfortable effects of this treatments' side effect it serves as one of the most effect treatment methods available today.

Finally, hormone therapy offers the elimination of hormones present in cancerous cells and blocks their growth ability. With this breast cancer treatment option, it's important to know that certain cancers grow from hormones causing certain cancers to continue to grow. Drugs, radiation, surgery or other therapies are used to block those hormones, reducing the production of the cancerous cells.

With all of the advances and treatment options for breast cancer the likelihood that a diagnosis of a cancerous tumor is no longer a prescription for breast removal or death. Researchers and health professionals are more than optimistic that the numbers of treatable breast cancer survivors will continue to steadily increase as the years pass. Good news for those who are at risk for breast cancer.
