Blepharoplasty, or sometimes referred to as eyelid surgery, is a corrective procedure that can reduce bags or dark circles under the eyes, provide a more youthful appearance, and remove the excess wrinkles under the eyes. One of the first things that a person notices about another is their eyes. Because of this, it's important for your eyes to look their best. During the aging process, lines, puffiness, and wrinkles contribute to an aged or tired appearance. This aged look may make people think that you're tired or worn out and is not appealing to them. Eyelid lift surgery is sometimes performed along with other facial cosmetic surgery procedures including rhinoplasty or a face lift.

There are many common reasons that people will consider an eyelid lift. Many people have excessive skin or wrinkles surrounding their eyelids. Other people may have dark circles or bags under their eyelids. The last most common reason is that some people have a tired appearance either due to inherited factors or puffiness.

As it is with any plastic surgery procedure, before receiving an eyelid lift you need to have a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon. In this meeting with your plastic surgeon you will go over precisely what it is that you want. Your surgeon will also inform you of post operative care along with pre-surgery requirements. The last thing you and your plastic surgeon will do is set up a time and date for your surgery.

The blepharoplasty procedure includes the plastic surgeon creating tiny incisions in the natural contours around the eyes. These incisions should leave no scarring. Most plastic surgeons choose to work with the upper eyelids first to tighten loose skin and remove any fatty tissue. After this, lower eyelids will be completed. This will reduce dark circles and eliminate puffiness. Sometimes a plastic surgeon will use laser technology to smooth lower eyelid areas. Fine lines and wrinkles are sometimes firmed by the use of botox injections in newer techniques.

The procedure usually takes between one and three hours and is typically performed in the plastic surgeon's office. The eyelid surgery will most likely last longer if there are additional cosmetic procedures being performed.

Post operative instructions will usually call for limited movement and plenty of rest. By doing this, the healing process will be sped up and recovery time will decrease. Patients will sometimes report minor pain after the surgery, but this can usually be treated with oral medication. Complications are rare, but there is always some risk with every procedure. Patients can lower their risk by following the instructions of their plastic surgeon.
