Breast augmentation may appear to be out of style this season when we consider many of the fashions that have grown in popularity this summer. However, breast augmentation is not like clothing that goes in and out of style- it is an enhancement for most that leverages a refined image and self -confidence both clothed and unclothed. This is further confirmed by the continued growth in breast augmentation despite America's difficult financial times. In 2006, close to 330,000 women had breast augmentation- a 55% increase from 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The age breakdown for 2006 was, as follows:

Close to 10,000 underwent breast augmentation between the ages of 13-19.

Nearly 119,000 breast augmentation patients were 20-39 years of age.

Over 100,000 were 40 years old and over.

If we were to consider the sheer volume of breast augmentation procedures at roughly a half million for 2005 and 2006, it is clear that many women in the U.S. have breast implants today. It's true, breast augmentation can't be out of style.

However, there are exceptions to the rule. Some women that have had breast augmentation years ago had decided upon a significant enlargement at the time of initial consultation. These women may opt for revision surgery to decrease the cup size in later years. Others that have had breast augmentation years ago have gained weight which may have been due to lifestyle habits or a part of the natural progression of age. This unexpected extra weight on the breasts may be discomforting. Thus, breast reduction through removal of the breast implants or replacement of breast implants with ones that are smaller may be worthwhile.

All in all, though, breast augmentation is usually requested by women with small or misshapen breasts. Breast augmentation can be life enhancing in several ways for these women. This is why breast augmentation is fashionable for so many. And not just a fashion that goes out of style.

One decision more and more women are making everyday is to have breast augmentation surgery (a procedure to enhance the size of your breasts by using breast implants - saline implants or silicone implants.) Breast implants are indicated for females for breast augmentation surgery where the patient is at least 18 years of age, and for reconstruction of the female breast. By inserting breast implants, plastic surgeons are able to increase a woman's bust line by one or more bra cup sizes. Advances in breast implant technology and surgical technique are making breast augmentation surgery a popular option among women of all ages desiring a change in the way they look. The decision to undergo breast enlargement surgery may result in a more flattering, better proportioned figure, more clothing options, and may enhance your confidence and self-esteem.
