You are likely a candidate for thigh lift surgery if you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity around your thigh area, hip area, or buttocks. Other reasons a person may want to have this procedure performed is if their skin in their thigh area is saggy and flabby and/or dimpled in appearance. A thigh lift or thighplasty may also be something you desire if the appearance of your thigh is greatly improved when you lift up the excess skin. This procedure is often looked into by patients who are self-conscious about their lower body's appearance. Thighplasty is intended to create a tighter, more attractive thigh skin and give you improved contours. It is also intended to reduce the irregularities in skin surface.
Thigh lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis unless it is otherwise advised by your surgeon. Every patient has a different body and different needs. Your plastic surgeon will likely create a design and make incisions based on your clothing or personal desires if it is possible. Lifting the inner thighs only requires short incisions extending from the outer portion of the thigh and groin area crease around to the crease of the buttock. If desired, lateral or anterior thigh lift procedures can be performed as separate procedures. The buttocks can be lifted creating either upper or lower scars. Your concerns should be addressed when meeting with your plastic surgeon. He or she is able to provide you with details about what procedure is available for your specific problems.
Once your thigh lift is completed you are placed in a compression garment to reduce the swelling and assist in the natural tightening and shrinking of the skin. Initial discomfort is typically easily controlled with prescription medication for smaller thigh lift procedures. For larger thigh lift procedures, you are often required to stay at a nursing facility or hospital for one or two nights. This allows for additional help that you may need including pain injections, intravenous catheters, etc. The bruising and swelling will usually go down within a month, any strenuous activity will usually be possible to perform in six weeks, and almost all signs of symptoms are gone in 4-6 months. Extra procedures that may enhance the result of your thighplasty include breast enhancement, calf implants, liposuction, and tummy tuck surgery.
Most often thigh lift surgery is considered cosmetic which means that it is not covered by insurance companies. This means that the patient is responsible for all payments. Only when you are at your consultation can a plastic surgeon tell you what your specific risks and suitability for this procedure are. Every surgical procedure has some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome of surgery occur every so often and major complications are unusual.
