Many people are under the misconception that, cold fishes manufacture these omega-3 fatty acids, that notion is absolutely wrong.

What actually happens is that, as the fish consumes smaller fishes and algae as a part of its food, the fatty acids are formed and gets deposited on the fatty tissue of their body.

Fish oil has a lot of health benefits, but you cannot just go on consuming them just because they are good for your health. You have to know how much you can consume.

Different doses of fish oil are prescribed for different ailments like, cancer, strokes, to reduce the danger of heart attacks, to reduce the level of cholesterol and so on.

In case you want to take fish oil for arthritis, then it is suggested that you take about two grams of docosahexaenoic acid or DHA and twice the amount of eicosapentaenoic acid or EHA. This is a good amount of fish oil for arthritis as arthritis is provocative.

If you are looking for a dosage of fish oil to reduce the risk of a cardiac arrest then there is no particular dosage given. Dosage of fish oil is given only to those people who have suffered of an attack before.

If you are looking to lower the cholesterol levels in the body, then it is recommended that you can take about two to four grams of EPA, Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA.

To maintain your mental health you can take around one to two grams everyday. If you are suffering from depression or any other psychological issues, then you can consume a good amount of EPA.

Including omega-3 fatty acids in the diet of your children will increase the focus of your child's brain. If a pregnant woman consumes omega-3 fatty acids, it will help in the production of healthy mother's milk. However, a very minimal dosage of one gram is to be consumed by pregnant women.

The above dosages can be taken everyday. But you are recommended that initially, you divide the dosage and consume them twice, so that if there are any side effects, you can check at the early stages.

However, it is always best to consult your physician about the dosage of fish oil that you can consume in cases like, limiting heart attacks and if you are pregnant women.

Though it is fine to consume omega-3 fatty acids in your regular diet and include the same in your child's diet.

For the normal well being of your body and mind, if you happen to meet your doctor for any other reason, there is nothing wrong in checking the particular dosage with him.

So, consumption of fish oil totally depends on you as an individual and the purpose of your consumption.
