Every parent knows the helpless feeling that comes each time your baby cries. The instant need to "fix" whatever is wrong and to make it all better. One of the times when this feeling seems to never go away is during the teething phase. The crying, it seems, is constant, as is the incessant chewing on articles of clothing, toys, and fingers, etc. Basically anything that can be shoved into their adorable little mouths to alleviate the itching and pain is fair game.
Do not forget the teething phase also comes with drooling. Who knew that a baby could produce that much saliva! You read books, watch programs, join parenting groups, yet nothing prepares you for the precious sight of your child drooling like a Saint Bernard.
At first the drooling is adorable and the crying makes you feel protective, but then comes the day when you are at your wits end and you are faced with the question, "What can I do about this?" There are many products on the market that are adequate, but one of the best means of addressing both issues, the drooling and the teething, are frozen waffles. Women used to give their children overcooked pieces of bread to chew on. It is the exact same concept.
A teething child can gnaw on a frozen waffle for a good amount of time and it is soft enough that it does not cause any damage to the delicate gums, it is predisposed to catch the drool that seems to flow from their little mouths like a spigot left on high, and most importantly it is firm enough to scratch the itch that causes teething babies to become so irritable.
As with anything that you give a child, you should supervise closely. You want to ensure that the waffle does not break and that it is replaced before it becomes too soft. Make sure that your child also is familiar with finger foods before using this method. A child that is not accustomed to some sort of solid food will find it difficult to grasp the concept. If your toddler is used to holding a cookie and taking small bites of it then this will be perfectly safe for them.
One of the most effective ways to soothe a teething child before bedtime is to give a light finger massage to the gums. Always make sure to wash your hands thoroughly first and while cradling your baby, use your finger and lightly rub back and forth over the gums that are beginning to cut teeth. Now, while this is not practical to do all the time it is a wonderful before bedtime moment that increases the bond between you and your child and helps them to get to sleep a little easier.
No one said that parenting was going to be easy or clean and the teething process is different for every child. The best approach is to find what works best for your child. At the end of the day, all we want is for our children to be happy, healthy, and productive.
