It is believed that scientist were the first to wear white lab coats. Those days, scientist proved through research that most of the medications that the doctors provided were not up to the mark. They did not trust the medications provided by the doctors. The general public also considered scientist above doctors and had great respect for them, especially in the medical field. Slowly, doctors started wearing the white doctors coats to gain more respect and trust in their medical field.

Nowadays, white lab coats also known as doctor coats, are used by almost all professionals in the medical facility. Doctors coats are used to protect their clothing and also avoid spreading germs. It is mandatory to wear a lab coat while you are at work, as medical facility environment also involves lot of mess and spills. Probably, this is the reason why scientist used a lab coat those days.

Lab coats are worn in a particular design and length based on the dress code that is set by the hospital authorities. They may have minor variations from one hospital to another. But, in general doctors wear white coats and not colored coats. This has been in practice for quite some time and they believe they would gain more respect by wearing a white coat. There are colored coats available in the market. Some hospitals prefer to distinguish different roles of medical professionals and would offer colored coats to them. Wearing lab coats are also a matter of etiquette. There is a debate if black colors should be used and if the medical professionals have to wear different colors of lab coat based on their profession. There is also an issue with the buttons. Professionals' continue to debate on the requirements of buttoning a lab coat fully or leaving it open. It does not matter how you wear your lab coat. But, wearing a lab coat is a must as it helps to maintain aseptic environment in the hospital premises.

There are different materials available in the market for lab coats. You get 100% cotton material, which feels good but difficult to maintain and is costly compared to other materials. Also, cotton material is not stain resistant. There are 100% polyester which are stain resistant, easy to maintain and cheaper too. The best material would be combed cotton or spun polymer in a durable and strong weave.

There are a variety of aesthetic options available in the markets. They range from different colors and patterns. Some companies also offer customized lab coats with monogram and embroidery. The style of wearing a lab coat may differ from each person and is also marked by the standards set by the establishment. A lab coat enhances the image of the medical professional and gives them a good presentation.
