During Florence Nightingale's time, nurses wore heavy garments with aprons, which were cumbersome to wear. This was the time when aprons took a new meaning when Florence imposed her ideas of infection control. The aprons were then used to protect them from blood and debris that they encountered during the war. The uniform gave them a lot of respect and they were treated like angels of god.

Slowly, nurses started to realize the need for infection control and aseptic conditions. The nurses wanted to protect themselves and also protect the patients by not transferring infections to them. At the same time, they wanted to be comfortable and were looking for less cumbersome activities like starching and ironing. There was also a need for durable, cheap and stain resistant work wear. This need bought about the evolution of surgical wear to bring us the entry of surgical scrubs into the profession nearly 100 years later.

In the beginning Doctors and Nurses used scrubs only in the operating rooms. There was a revolution in scrubs in the year 1970. Professionals started using printed material and also stitched their personalized caps. Multi color scrub sets, scrub tops and scrub pants were introduced. Blue seemed to be all time favorite. Sooner, hospitals started having surgical scrubs in blue or green color.

Even today, scrubs worn in operation theatre are mostly solid green, blue or mix of both. Surgical scrubs are owned by the hospitals or leased through a commercial linen service to avoid laundering and sterility issues.

Non-surgical scrubs come in a wide range of pattern, designs ranging and even customized scrubs. Today, most professionals choose their own lifestyle to match their profession. Medical scrubs have reached their modern state. There are different styles like V-neck tops, round necks, elastic waist, drawstring, long sleeve, short sleeve just to name a few. Jackets are also matched to suit the scrub sets.

Professionals have started branding by embroidering their name on the scrubs and hospitals also find it a good marketing scheme to emboss their hospital name and logo on the scrubs. This has carried over into today's market. Daycares, veterinarians, dental clinics and many more businesses are embossing their company logo onto their scrubs.

The sky is the limit for the styles, colors, fabric and patterns that are available today for medical scrubs. Scrub sets are tailor made to suit your profession and personality.

The glory of the surgical scrubs has magnified hundred times. Professionals are able to express themselves and be professional at the same time. The colors, patterns, fabric and style that are chosen for the scrubs make them special.
