As a young woman I gave the following suggestion to my unconscious mind with interesting results. It was this " all men will find me attractive and all women will relate to me as a friend".

The unconscious mind is the part of the mind that never sleeps. It functions 24/7 it regulates our heartbeat and other physical processes essential for our survival. I had learnt that I could contact the unconscious mind and instruct it to bring the things that I wanted into my life. I had learnt about the law of concentrated attention and how the things that I thought about regularly and gave attention to would occur in my life.

This would happen whether my thoughts were positive or negative. Most importantly I had learnt that I could choose what to bring into my life by controlling my thoughts.

However I did not get it right on this occasion as the following illustrates. A colleague at least twenty years older than myself started to offer me lifts in his car. At first I thought that he was just being friendly. Then he started to ask about where I lived and who I shared my home with. This felt a little too personal, why would he want to know that? I don't recall if he ever asked me out. I would have discouraged this once I realised that we had a misunderstanding. I do remember that he presented me with a bunch of flowers.

Shortly after this I was due to have a work appraisal. My married boss had driven me to premises where I might be working in future and showed me around. He suggested that we stop off at a pub before he dropped me at the Railway Station as agreed.

In the pub he produced the relevant paper work from his briefcase and started to discuss my performance as a manager. It seemed to make sense to complete appraisals in the relaxed atmosphere of the pub rather than in the workplace. I assumed that this was company policy. However the questions became increasingly personal and inappropriate.

I had learnt my lesson you just can't be vague with the unconscious mind. Looking back what I had probably meant in framing my suggestion was that "men that I found attractive would be attracted to me, other men would simply like me as a person"

The unconscious mind does not edit what you ask for is what you get. Don't let that put you off though. Giving myself the right suggestions has brought into my life my ideal man, home and career.

My point is simply that in communicating with your unconscious mind you have to get it right, be clear and precise. The unconscious mind can only act on suggestions', which are phrased positively and in the present tense whether these are given in words or pictures.

Your unconscious mind isn't being difficult it simply can't work out what you actually mean. It can only act on precisely the instructions given. I said earlier that I could choose what to bring into my life by controlling my thoughts. The good news is that you can learn to do this too. The even better news is that by having read about my mistake you can avoid it.
