If you are interested in opening or starting a business, it is best that you have some idea of what to expect and what you will need to open the doors for business. A consultant will be able to point you in the direction of practices that can save you time, money and effort as well as steering you away from the typical pitfalls that await the new business owner. Even if you have owned and operated a business before, it is best to seek out the advice of a business consultant, especially if you want your business to be as green as it possibly can be. What makes it Green? Why Should People Come to Your Business?

A green business consultant must make sure that his own business is a good example of the virtues that he is extolling. Of all of the ways that any business can go green, reducing paper is essential. Tips that you could utilize as well as teach include: using recycled paper only, double sided printing for all non vital information, emails and face to face communications for all internal messages and posting the use of recycling.

Another focus of the green business consultant will be the website for the business. A good website will reduce, if not eliminate travel costs and energy usage for the consumer. Going to web only sales for some companies can save them more than enough money to offset the few customers they lose, by not having a brick and mortar storefront anymore. On a related note, the consultant must stress that if the company is going to have a website that customer service online, must be as good as or better than what the customer would get offline. What Kind of Education or Training do I Need?

Having a business degree is a must- you cannot tell people how to run their business, if you do not know what you are talking about. You will not gain the confidence of top clients with a high school diploma and a willing attitude, no matter how business savvy you think you might be. What is the Start up Costs or Initial Investments?

Beyond your degree, you will need a good office set up, preferably one in a green building. If your city has started certifying buildings, then this is advantageous, but if not, then you should have a basic idea of what you need to be looking at.

You will need a computer, printer and other peripheral devices for the office (the more employees the more computers will be needed). All green practices should be implemented and strongly encouraged from the top of the company down.
