An Attitude Of Gratitude

I told you about going fishing with my brother. Gary is 61 years old and has special needs. Every year he goes to Hayward, Wisconsin to join his friends in a program called Fishing Has No Boundaries. It's a really great program for people with disabilities. The folks in the Hayward area go out of their way to put on a 3 day show that is great fun for all concerned.

Whenever I spend some time with my brother I always come to realize how thankful that he is for anything that anyone does for him He always reminds me of how important it is to have an attitude of gratitude.

So here we are sitting on the Chippewa Flowage in Hayward and it's starting to rain and thunder. Anyone who knows anything about being out of doors knows that it's not a good idea to be out on the water when the thunder starts. Both the guide and I decide that it's time to go in to shore and wait out the storm. I can tell that Gary is not too excited about going in and would rather stay but he goes along anyway. Fortunately the rain is over in ten minutes and we're back at it again.

During the time that we were on shore Gary never complained even though I know that he would have rather been out on the water catching some lunkers. So there's a lesson to learn here. He's great at rolling with the punches. He never seems to let things get him down and just keeps on keeping on.

What about when the fish start biting? Watch out now. Both the guide and I were hooking fish for Gary. The guide was in the front of the boat and I was in the back. There were quite a few times when both of us would have a fish on and Gary would have to run from the front of the boat to the back to catch fish with two poles. Talk about a guy being in heaven. He was beaming. It's pretty easy to be happy around a guy who is pleased with and thankful for the little things that come his way. It's always a great lesson for me to watch my brother and see the way that he makes the most of life by making the most of everything that comes his way. He really is a pleasure and blessing to be around.

Say thanks a lot, Fred Nicklaus
