How many people do you know that have sworn on New Years Eve to go on a diet? My guess is - several! And how many have became slimmer - and stayed on that weight? My guess is - not so many!

It's a fact that few people who manage to lose pounds, to lose love handles and to lose stomach fat manage to keep it off for long. The statistics are grim - almost 90 percent of those who are successful lapse and put weight on again within five years!

Here are three simple but crucial tips to help you succeed where others fail:

Tip 1: Think about your goals before you start. There's nothing wrong with setting big goals, but if your goals are too big it won't work. The goal becomes intimidating instead of reachable. One main reason why so many people fail in their weight loss efforts is that their goals seem impossible to achieve.

Maybe you realize that you need to make large life style changes in order to became slimmer and fitter. If you usually eat a take-away and drink a fizzy drink when you came home - because you're tired after work, say - don't start eating only a salad with water. You won't keep it up many days, because you are used to the processed foods, they taste good to you and fill you up.

Instead make one small change - replace the butter with olive spread, some days later try replacing the fizzy drink with squash, a few days later try to replace the white bread with wholegrain bread etc.

See the principle? Make one small change at a time, let it take time, and you'll find that a few weeks later you actually eat healthier. Without struggling, in fact practically effortlessly!

Tip 2: Give some thoughts to your habits. Overweight people always have some bad habits that contribute to their weight problems. For example, fat people often snack between meals. And the snack is usually not very healthy. It is illuminating to sneak a glance in overweight people's shopping trolley next time you're in the supermarket .... it is usually filled with chips, ready made meals, chocolates, biscuits and so forth.

It is - of course - much easier said than done to change habits, so instead of going head-on, try to sneak up to your bad habit sideways, so to speak. Don't try to skip the afternoon snack - try to snack on something healthier instead. Instead of coffee with sugar and a cookie, try coffee without sugar. If you can't stand the taste of unsweetened coffee, try flavoured water and a fruit, for example a banana, or a peach. You'll still get that little "sugar rush" your body is used to, but in a far healthier way.

Tip 3: Either get rid of temptations or give in to them! This sounds strange, I know, but if you choose "good" temptations it is OK. After all, what's the point of being slim and unhappy? Rather a little over your ideal weight but happy, wouldn't you agree? Change your temptation so it adds to your quality of life instead of detracting from it.

If your temptation is half a bottle of wine, and you always have a few bottles around - buy one really good, expensive wine, and just have one glass of it. But take time over the wine, savour it, smell it, feel the sensuality of it. Go for quality instead of quantity.

Similarly, if you love chocolate then stop buying multipacks of ordinary milk chocolate that is only 35 - 40% cocoa. Go for dark, expensive chocolate, 70% or more, and have just one bit now and then. But, again, let it melt on your tongue, make it a sensual, almost sinful, experience! This way you'll be happier, you have given in to your temptation and it has actually made your life better!

It's not easy to get rid of your love handles! And to lose weight and keep it off is hard. Here you'll find 3 simple tips to make your weight loss effort a lot easier.
