You were polite and submissive, yet the police officer handed you a speeding ticket.

Now there are two things that you can do. You can pay the fine or fight the speeding ticket. How do you choose?

It all boils down to the money. If you choose to accept the ticket, you will pay the fine. You will also likely pay an insurance surcharge for several. You'll need to do the math here by, adding up the fine and the accrued surcharges.

You must also think about the points. Are these the first points you will have on your license or are you in danger of losing your license, due to too many points? What will not being able to drive cost you? That is a scary thought.

What will it cost you if you fight the ticket? Lost wages from work, fees for a speeding ticket strategy tool, and your time to prepare. It will cost you a lot more to pay the ticket.

Even it money isn't an issue for you; you'll still have to consider the points on your license, because too many could cost you your license.

Can you win?

The National Motorist Association states that over 50% of the drivers who fight their speeding ticket, do win. And of those who lose their case, a large number of them have their charge reduced. Those are pretty good odds. There is at least a 50% chance that you will walk away without your speeding ticket, no fines and no points. All you have to do is show up in court (some places you can even contest a speeding ticket through the mail).

How should you plead?

With a speeding ticket, you can plead guilty, Nolo Contendre, or not guilty. Both a guilty plea and the nolo plea have pretty much the same results, which is you paying the fine and getting higher insurance rates. If you plead not guilty, you will be given a court date. If you want to beat your speeding ticket, you must go to court. Carefully review your ticket if you are going to fight it. There will be very specific instructions that you must follow, these vary greatly by state and even by county.

The cost of a speeding ticket is much more than the fine, you can be paying for one ticket for several years. Taking the time to prepare for court and fight your speeding ticket will save you both money and aggravation in the future.
