You probably already know that getting a moving checklist ready for your move is a great tool to help you keep things organized and together. While there are many ways to create this, you should always try to make it work for your specific situation. There are many different factors to think about, and if you are moving with kids of any age, this should be one of the paramount concerns. Relocation and kids do not always get along well, and having a list on hand can really help you keep things moving smoothly.

Adding Kids to the List

A moving checklist, as you know, includes all things that need to be taken care of throughout a move. This will include events before, on, and after moving day. Everything should be listed out so that nothing is forgotten or skipped, especially if your child has specific needs or tasks during the move. Make sure to include them in the brainstorming process so that they feel as if they are an integral part of the move. Doing this can cut down on some issues later on when a child feels that the situation is totally out of control.

Things to Include

When you have children, you should include certain things in your list. Some of these things can include the packing of their room, the last visit to their current doctor, withdrawal from their current school, a goodbye party for their friends, and any other events or tasks that they might be involved with. You should also include what they will be doing on moving day, even if it is simply going to stay with a friend or family member.

Specify

Another important part of the moving checklist should be any specifications of what your child wants left unpacked. Make sure to set limits on this, but allow them to have a travel bag or box of things that they want to keep with them while the rest of their things are transported to their new home. Having a few favorites on hand can go a long way in keeping them happy and content even in this time of turmoil.

Kids will stress out through a move, as it is a big change most of the time. You can use your moving checklist to provide them with expectations and a schedule that they can know about while the relocation is happening. This is important and it can save you a lot of behavioral and emotional trouble later on in the move. Being able to provide a stable and secure feeling to your kids is possible with the right organization and planning throughout your move.
