Yes, this is a touchy subject for some of us with a Lap Band. Some people think that once they have a Lap Band, they will be able to eat anything that they want and not exercise and they will lose weight. Of course, when the patient hits perfect restriction, this will most likely happen in the beginning. In short, some people think that having the Gastric Band is the magic bullet - they just need to have this surgery and they won't have to change anything else in their lives. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It's worth remembering that generally people lose weight over 2 years with the Lap Band and that those who get the best results have the view that they will completely change their lifestyle to achieve new levels of health and well being. To achieve a good level of health and well being, we must choose to eat healthy, nutritious foods the majority of time as well as move our bodies with consistent exercise.
As we all know, it's all about steady consistent changes to your life that add up to huge successes!
Here are some tips to remember:
Use your weight as a guide:
If you are not losing weight ask yourself the following questions:
* Is the band tight enough or do I need a fill?
* Am I choosing to eat healthy or unhealthy foods?
* Am I exercising? Have I continued to build my fitness?
Review your eating habits:
* Book in to see a nutritionist to review your eating habits to ensure that you are on the right track.
* Track your calories, fat, carbs and protein for a week or two every month or so and analyse to see where you can improve.
* Review what you're buying, do you need to adjust your shopping habits to reduce portion sizes?
* Review how you're eating when you go out, are you still ordering the same or have you made changes? Why not try sharing meals with friends and family whenever possible?
Track your exercise to see how you are improving:
* Book in to see a personal trainer to get them to do a program for you!
* An easy way is use a pedometer, build up to 2 km/1 Mile of walking and see how long it takes you, then set out to beat that time!
* Increase your distance (not by more than 10% per week) over time and increase your intensity over time - like anything your body will get used to a certain way after some time.
* Mix it up and have fun - have you tried ballroom dancing? Its great fun and a heck of a workout. How about a team sport, gym classes, water aerobics, bicycling with your family - the possibilities are endless!
* I like to make any catch up with a friend a chance for exercise - a walk in a nice spot around my area, a session at the gym, a swim.
Review the causes of your eating habits constantly:
If you have some times where you have eaten some unhealthy food when you didn't really want to - delve into the reason why - here are some questions to help you along your way:
* What was food representing for me at that time?
* What happened before this that caused me to choose unhealthy items?
* How could I have changed the outcome of this situation? (ie. what could I do differently?)
* What can I do to recognise this situation in the future and change the outcome?
It's important to have a holistic approach to your Lap Band journey. Start with some small changes each week and you will be surprised at the massive differences that it will make to your life.
