If selecting a Hot Tub for purchase here are some points to carefully consider.

If you simply want the cheapest in just terms of minimum cash out lay at the time of purchase and have NO concerns what so ever for running costs, maintenance costs or indeed the useful life of a product then just buy the cheapest import that you can find.

How ever that will probably mean that you have been fooled to sacrifice quality and good engineering for a cheap rate product that may look the part but is not in reality a quality product. Remember all that glitters is not gold.

BUT just remember that you will need to book that skip that will be needed when you scrap it. I know of many cheap spas that have worked for a day or so and have not worked for many months thereafter. Makes you think a bit does it not. After all even a cheap spa is still a major purchase. Even more so if you have to buy another one.

That ever so well known phrase springs to mind "buying cheap often means buying twice".

Well what is actually wrong with a cheap import - loads of things but here are a few to get you thinking:-

The Base or lack of one!

Has it got a base - that is a solid floor to keep the damp from seeping in let alone all the horrible beasties such as termites that you can get and even worse the kind that eat through wiring harnesses and electric cables. I had an actual Hot Tub owner call me and ask for a quote to rejoin some 60/70 cables of a wiring harness from a cheaply made import. Buy a properly made and designed product and you will not get these problems.

The Shell

Now there is the shell to consider and is that constructed out of proper branded acrylic such as Lucite or Aristech both leading American brands. It is simply not good enough if they just say "American Acrylic" that's like saying its Indian Tea when you mean its Earl Grey or Ceylon. If they can not or will not provide the brand name I doubt very much that it is in fact American Acrylic. What they really mean is that it is based on or a copy of American Acrylic. One should always try the lipstick test and see how easy it is to wipe lipstick off the shell. With the brands that I refer to it wipes straight off if it does not then it is not branded acrylic.

How strong is the shell and is it properly moulded and finished. Look for stretch marks on the inner curves of the Shell and if they appear again it is a thinner and cheaper grade material. We have seen many spas from the east where the inside of the shell feels damp as if it is still curing or drying out many months after production.

How is the shell supported? A proper made spa will have a layer of ABS plastic applied to the Acrylic shell to provide inherent support. It will not then need a steel frame those that do are not properly made or designed in the first place. Using a steel frame is a dead give away that the shell is not properly constructed to take the weight of the water. A properly made spa will have its Acrylic shell supported by ABS plastic not a steel frame which is a very outdated mode of construction.

Electronic Controls

Electronics - what controls does it have - does it have Balboa or Gecko both leading brands or does it have Wing Wang Woo controls. If so they are very hard to get spares and the like for. I accept that some components used in Balboa or Gecko control packs are made in the east but the point is that these two companies then assemble the complete product under proper quality control standards. Also I have personal experience of raising queries' with these companies and they answer emails in a matter of minutes and their knowledge of their products (as you would expect) is second to none. Also they speak and communicate in English so that's a great boon compared to Spas made in the East.

Conclusion

I suppose at the end of the day one pays ones money and takes one choice.

As a Hot Tub dealer I want the very best product for the money so as to provide clients with outstandingly good value products. Equally and in many ways much more important to me is that I do not want warranty claims or complaints from clients about their spas. So in my view it is just as much in my interest as it is in the consumers that they buy properly made, designed and engineered products.

So the main point of all this is simply that those manufacturers who provide real and meaningful guarantees ensure that their production and quality control is such that in the MAIN they do not get warranty claims. That's the real issue if you buy a properly made spa that will cost more money than a cheaper import you will not need to make a claim under the warranty. You should have the use of a good quality Spa for very many years more so if you just carry out some simple and regular maintenance.

The say in Property there are three main considerations Location, Location, Location well with a Jacuzzi it has to be Quality, Quality, Quality.
