Scientists at the Centre Hyperbare de L'lle have recently uncovered a potential method of treatment for soldiers suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) by using a method commonly used to treat diver's bends.

The method of hyperbaric pressure therapy is often administered to diver's who have suffered from decompression sickness (DCS). DCS occurs when an individual has a decrease in pressure around the body following a big increase in pressure, according to news reports.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which are common methods of attack used by insurgents in the Iraq war against U.S. soldiers, the "constellation of signs and symptoms attributable to mild TBI and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the same as those seen in a condition in which bubbles are formed from the exposure to excessive pressures," as reported by news articles on the recent study.

TBI is considered by many to be the signature wound of the Iraq war and because of the same pressures delivered during an IED blast that occur when a victim suffers from DCS, the method may find success among U.S. soldiers returning from the Iraq war and suffering from TBI and similar brain injuries.

Additional TBI Treatments

Individuals who have suffered from a TBI can participate in a number of clinical trials available to best suit their symptoms of TBI, additionally by contacting a neurologist who specializes in traumatic brain injury, a TBI victim will be adequately diagnosed, as TBI is difficult to treat because of the marked distinctions between each individual's TBI. According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), "appropriate treatment and rehabilitation will vary from individual to individual and programs and treatments change as a person's needs change."

However, it remains true that individuals who do not treat their injury signs and symptoms will likely suffer from long-term brain damage and increased risk of permanent injury. Identifying TBI symptoms can be difficult, but the Mayo Clinic has compiled a list of several signs based on severity of a brain injury. Individuals who have suffered from mild TBI will likely shows the following signs:

* brief unconsciousness

* amnesia

* headache

* loss of balance

* dizziness

* sensory problems

* mood changes

* memory difficulties

The Mayo Clinic reports the following as potential symptoms of moderate to severe TBI including:

* combativeness

* agitation

* slurred speech

* persistent headache

* continued nausea and vomiting

* seizures, epilepsy, convulsions

* inability to wake during sleep

* pupil dilation

* coordination loss

* intense confusion

* extremity weakness, numbness

Victims of TBI are encouraged to not only seek treatment for their condition, but to also locate an experienced personal injury law firm, which will be able to locate a traumatic brain injury lawyer that can provide a free legal consultation on the details and development of a TBI lawsuit.

Litigation surrounding a brain injury incident may increase a victim's chances of receiving monetary compensation for their injury. This money can be used for payment of treatments to increase the health of a TBI victim.
