There are several overlooked parts of building a website. One of these overlooked website components is a sitemap.

A sitemap is more than just a superfluous piece of text and coding. A sitemap is the roadmap to your website - a way to tell search engines just how to get from point A to point B. A sitemap that has been well constructed can help both visitors and search engines properly navigate through your website, help visitors recognize your site's content, optimize your website's ability to rank well in search engines, and provide organization that will help both you and the visitor understand your website's ebb and flow.

In order to construct your sitemap to your best advantage, always keep in mind the following:

1) Navigation - A sitemap, as implied by its name, is a map of your website. As such, it can be useful for your visitor's website navigation. Should the visitor get lost when clicking on links, they can use the sitemap to figure out where they are and where they should go next. This is incredibly useful for complex sites with a lot of pages and information

2) Content - When people visit your site, you want them to quickly understand what your website is about. Sitemaps offer that opportunity. People that click on the sitemap will quickly get a grasp of exactly what is available on your site and where it is located. That's why the best way to construct a sitemap is to keep in mind exactly what you are trying to convey to your visitors. In the process, you may begin to understand more about how you want your website to work for you.

3) Site Optimizing - Sitemaps work for more than just website navigation; they also offer a way for search engines to pick up on the layout of your website and index it accordingly. Search engine spiders like to crawl every part of your website with the least amount of effort, and a sitemap offers them the ability to locate exactly where they should be crawling.

4) Organization - Once you have completed your website, the sitemap offers a way to help you see the whole picture of your website so that you can decide if your website navigation is best for you, the user, and the search engines. Then, any time you need to add new content to your site, you will easily be able to figure out where it belongs in order to maintain your website's flow. The best way to construct a sitemap is to make it simple for both you and the visitor.

There are several reasons why a sitemap is vital to your website's success. By keeping information on website navigation in one, easily identifiable place, you are able to see at a glance where you, your visitors, and the search engines will find what you are looking for without having to constantly go back through your pages and the coding, hoping you can locate any issues.
