Have you ever noticed anything special about every website and every business card? Each one has a logo. A clearly identifying mark that helps customers associate the business with that logo. In essence the public need only see the logo to recall the name of the company. That simple logo can and often does become part of the culture of the company. What if you could be the one to develop those visual landmarks?

The Plans

Even if you don't have a graphic design background it is still possible to become skilled and sought after as a logo designer. You can purchase software programs that allow you to mix and match existing elements to create an easy to assemble logo. These programs may be helpful when you start as they take a lot of guesswork out of the process.

However, it is likely you will need to keep learning graphic design skills and how to blend certain disciplines to create unique effects. The truth is the quick assemble logo programs are useful, but also widely used. The result is the client may feel that he or she has seen something similar to the work before.

Consider joining a graphic design forum and ask questions of those who have been providing graphic and logo design for some time. Many of them are happy to show off the skills they posses and are equally happy to help point you in the right direction - especially if you are not in direct competition with what they are doing.

Find a friend (or even a friend of a friend) who is a business owner in need of a logo. Offer to provide a new logo at no cost, at a reduced rate or in trade for services. You can't gain any new clients if you don't have some success stories to share. Those stories may not be from paying customers, but they should be from happy and well-satisfied clients.

Offer new customers more than one design. Give them opportunity to be very impressed with your work. Be happy knowing that some of them will struggle over which great choice to go with.

Spend ample time trying to learn more about the client and their business. Your logo creation should be a natural extension of the business and convey sometimes subtle attributes in a design format that connects with the client and their customers.

The Funds

You will need a computer first and foremost. If you already have a computer you will need graphic design software and access to graphic creation or already produced elements that can be included in any logo designs you may work on.

If you already own your computer you may be able to get started for less than $100 or you could spend in excess of $1,000 based entirely on your budget and the skills you want to offer your clients.

Make sure to learn the skills needed in the development of print logos verses online logos. There are different formats required for each application.

The Market

Logo creation is a great market because it is not confined to one specific location. You can expand your client base by investing time and energy online. You may find yourself developing a logo for a company half a world away.

In this case online marketing may be your best strategy.

You should make your service available locally and even regionally, but again consider directing potential regional customers to your online site. This strategy allows them to see multiple samples without the extra overhead of actual print samples. Delivery of the final product can be managed online along with email invoicing.
