Are discount car insurers really the cheapest? Since everybody needs to cover their vehicle, and the drivers who use it, we all have to accept paying premiums while we drive. But we should not accept paying very high premiums, and that is why a lot of people look for discount insurers.

And you can find companies who advertise a lot, branding themselves as a discount carrier. But will these companies really be cheaper for you? I believe it all depends upon your own situation, and it is impossible to tell without doing some comparison shopping.

In my own case, I had to cover myself and a teenager to operate the two cars in our household. One of the most popular of the so-called discount carriers tripled my rates as soon as I added my son and a second car. My son had not had accidents, took a driver's safety course, and neither car was particularly expensive. Is this a situation I had to accept in order to drive?

This insurer may have been cheaper for some people, but it did not work out for us. They did not offer any discounts for my son's safety class or good grades. In addition, they would not offer a home and car discount if I moved my homeowners policy to their company.

Well, I decided to compare quotes with another carrier. This one is also a well known, top rated insurer, but they do not brand themselves as cheap. However, when they included discounts, including a home and car discount that the other carrier lacked, my rates ended up $200 a month cheaper!

That two hundred dollars a month adds up to $2,400 a year. In my opinion, that makes it worth the trouble of changing policies. If you multiplied the savings over 5 years, you could buy another inexpensive car! Even so, that $200 a month could help me save more money and afford a nice vacation once a year.

So which company will offer you affordable rates? You know that your own premiums will be affected by your age, driving history, how you drive, and the type of car you need to insure. Other factors matter too. So you need to find the major insurer who is friendliest to a driver like you.

With so many different variables to consider, it is easiest to use an online auto insurance quote form. You can enter your basic information one time, click a submit button, and then let major insurers send you quotes. This makes it simple to compare plans and policies. It also makes it simple to save some money.

You may not have to accept high insurance premiums. Be sure you shop around, especially if you have been hit with a high price increase. Some high risk drivers will have to pay more than lower risk drivers. Teenagers, as a whole, cost a lot to insure. But discounts can offset some of the cost, and it is important to look for an insurer who wants to give you the best deal.

Find the best car insurance deal by comparing quotes, and not just buying from an insurer who claims to be a discount auto insurance company.
