Some say that the government's Cash for Clunkers program was a big success. Nearly a half a million cars and trucks have been sold; a real boost to the economy. But many, including myself have some questions about it.

First of all, the reported three billion dollars of money did not fall out of the sky. Once again it is hard working, tax paying Americans, who are footing the bill. Experts say that in the long run it is not at all creating wealth or jobs. It is really just a transfer.

Money is simply being transferred to one taxpayer's wallet from someone else's. All you need to do is agree to have a perfectly serviceable vehicle destroyed. But how many of those clunkers (which all must be scrapped) are in good running condition? How long could they provide dependable transportation?

My '03 Ford Ranger has around 80,000 miles. I bought in '04 when it had around 20,000 miles. I made my last payment in January. I don't think it would qualify as a clunker because it gets better than the required 18 miles per gallon or less.

But, I do wonder how many of those so called, "clunkers" are actually in good running condition? It doesn't matter, the rules are the rules. They must be discarded. They have been labeled "worthless."

There are some people who feel like their lives are worthless. They see themselves as "clunkers." Many have lost hope. They feel like everyone has given up on them. Once full of life and excitement, they now feel like their lives have been discarded.

It doesn't matter if every one in world has given up on you, God never will. It doesn't matter if every one around you discards your worth; God sees you as having great worth. Others may see you as a clunker, but God sees you as His dear child.

You have value and worth. You have potential. You may not get as many miles to the gallon as you did twenty or thirty years ago, but you can still proudly roll down the freeway.

Regardless of the circumstances you are faced with, there is hope for better days ahead. Far too many people are hoping the government will do something for them. But having hope and confidence in a powerful and delivering God is a much better choice.

People may give up on themselves, but God will never, ever give up on you. I'm not talking about being religious or having a good feeling for a few minutes. That's nice, but it won't pay the mortgage. I'm talking about looking to God and tapping into His mighty power.

The promises of God are not limited to the circumstances of the day. His promises are available for those who choose to look to Him, trust in Him, and believe Him. For those who have confidence in Him, there is always great hope for the days ahead.

The government may offer cash for clunkers, but God offers hope for all of us, including those who see themselves as a clunker. Yes, "hope for clunkers!" And if you see yourself as a worthless clunker, change your thinking. See yourself as God's dear child with unlimited potential having Him as your Father.

To say the least, these are interesting times. Sadly, many continue to look to the government to solve all their problems. But, to trust in Who you can truly rely upon is a much better choice. I am glad the words are still on our currency: "In God We Trust."

  • Saint Frances Cabrini and Louisiani (Bob and Penny Lord)
Mother Cabrini loved the people of Louisiana. She could not be intimidated by anyone. Her time in New Orleans was proof positive of that. She was asked to work with the Bishop of New Orleans, to rid the state of the tremendous discrimination against the Italians there.

  • Pay The Piper (Phillip Ross)
In spite of that rightful claim upon the Corinthian purse, Paul did not request or receive any such care. Why not? Because he did not want to give the impression that his ministry was motivated by monetary concerns. He did not want to be perceived as a hired gun that had come in to clean up the Corinthian church. He did not want to put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

  • Freedom's Limits (Phillip Ross)
Against the tide of unrestrained freedom, Paul argued for caution and restraint. Here and elsewhere Paul argued that freedom in Christ did not mean that Christians were free to do whatever they wanted to do, even if there was nothing ultimately wrong with some particular action. But rather, Christians were free in Christ to live in obedience to Christ, free to care for and model behavior suited to the least discerning of Christ's people.

  • Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and four years of suffering (Bob and Penny Lord)
Elizabeth's spiritual director began a program of stripping Elizabeth of all that she had known, material possessions which had never been considered luxurious by her or her family.

Have you ever had your identity stolen? I have. Twice. It's not pleasant. Discover in this article the biggest identity thief that I know. This thief can steal your identity in a matter of seconds.

  • Blessed Anna Maria Taigi and false prophets (Bob and Penny Lord)
Accounts of Anna Maria Taigi and false prophets. A religious, known for his sanctity, believed that he had had a vision of two Angels who assured him his ambitious project was of Divine origin and would bear much fruit. When he told this to Anna Maria, she smiled sadly and gently informed him it would fail miserably. It did!

  • Morality and Maturity (Phillip Ross)
False gods are powerless because they are not real. And yet, people falsely believe they are real, and establish very real and destructive behaviors on that false basis. Consequently, the more mature are bound by the weaknesses of the less mature as a matter of service to the weaker brothers.
