Anglers that spend any amount of time on the bank in search of their quarry will no doubt understand the importance of a good quality bivvy tent to keep out the bad weather that the UK and Europe can dish out whilst fishing. There is nothing worse than being wet and cold on the bank and if this is the case you will soon give up your quest.
Fishing bivvies have considerably improved over the last decade with new improvements in frame design and fabric quality so the angler does not need to spend the night under an old 45" umbrella with their feet sticking out the bottom covered in a bin liner as in days gone by.
For those who still like an umbrella type shelter which are very useful for fitting into small swims they have now become a wider, oval shape and can incorporate storm sides. The centre pole can now also be removed leaving plenty of room for a bed chair and other kit. Most manufacturers now also offer an overwrap option to their umbrellas so you can quickly turn it into a bivvy with a roll up door if required.
If you are planning fishing for a long session in the UK or abroad and require a bit more room or wish to take a guest for the weekend there are now many 2 man sized quality bivvies on the market produced by many manufacturers such as Trakker, Fox, Nash, JRC and Chub. These bivvies have the capacity of holding two bed chairs plus all the necessary kit such as cooking equipment, cool boxes etc for a longer session.
Many tents not designed specifically for fishing have a multiple fibreglass pole system that need threading through the top sheet which can be a bit of a pain on your own and especially so in high winds, most anglers found this system too time consuming if they we only going for a short overnight session so fishing bivvy manufacturers came up with a rigid aluminium frame system similar to an old style pram hood design. Most anglers now tend to go for one of these style of bivvies as they are light extremely surdy and quick to erect and pack away even in strong winds.
The quality of the fabrics now used in modern day bivvies have much improved over the years and most are lighter, stronger and more waterproof than their predecessors and they are much less likely to tear during use or packing away, but a good tip is to spray your bivvy with Fabsil once a year to keep it in tip top condition. Some manufacturers are now also producing bivvies in camouflage coloured materials for the ultra cult anglers.
Another nice feature with many new bivvies is the zip off front so an angler can choose to have the bivvy front open in nice weather or if they want a good view of the lake, some manufacturers also offer an anti mosquito mesh front or shroud which will stop the bugs from biting during the summer months.
So when considering purchasing a bivvy consider the above features, choose one of the reputable manufacturers and be prepared to invest a bit of money for a quality product and your bivvy will last you many years and keep you warm and dry on the bank.
