Genetically modified organisms (GMO) have had their DNA altered through biotechnology. For example, this has occured in plants that have been made to confer resistance to a specific organism (bugs or viruses) or chemicals (herbicides, pesticides or fungicides).

However, should I or we say no to GMO?

Quite simply, in a word 'YES!

Here are the three reasons why I would advise people to say no to GMO at every given opportunity.

1. Considerations to safety. Particularly the long-term effects on safety are yet to be determined, therefore GMO food can be potentially dangerous. Food companies with their research and development have not invested enough time and money on this.

2. Naturally occurring food fits our body's nutritional requirements kind of like a hand-in-glove in terms of the body's demand. So any genetically modified food would be compromised in nutrition value.

3. Companies that genetically modify will own the crop (become patents). In other words, that which is naturally belonging to Mother Earth could become property of some greedy corporation. Think about the serious implications here...For example, how the farmers could be exploited... And on that subject of exploiting the farmers, there is an excellent video entitled 'Monsanto and our Genetically Modified Planet.' You can see it by putting the title in the Google search. It's one of those eye-opening must-see documentaries.

For years, patenting of seeds had not been allowed. However, when the 1980's came along, the US Supreme Court granted the patenting rights in a matter of hours, not giving the decision a chance to be opposed, allowing a few greedy corporations to begin taking over the world's food supply.

Since the 1980's Monsanto have become the biggest food supplier. They have patented over 600 genetically modified seeds. This is more than any other company. This has put legal obligations on farmers. Rather than continuing to select their own seeds for growing, like they have been doing year after year, they now have to buy the Monsanto seeds.

In order to keep farmers on the straight and narrow by sticking with Monsanto's genetically modified seeds, the corporation has used a whole range of tactics. It has been said that some are dirty or bullying, involving spying; videotaping, infiltrating group meetings amongst farmers, coercion by getting the farmers to sign legal documents, with all the strategies you would expect of the mafia or the Gestapo. Some corporation representatives pretend to be surveyors, but they are really there to gather information against any activities that go against Monsanto's wishes or to see that things go in their favour.

If you really care about your freedom and the rights of individuals to make choices, then, once again, I strongly recommend that you watch the above-mentioned video.
