"What we must decide is how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are." F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896'1940). American novelist. A slightly different twist on this same idea is found in The Go Giver by Bob Burg as The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much you give in value than you take in payment.

The question is, how do we determine our value? What do we have to offer that would be valuable? Who do we offer it to? Everyone has value. No matter what we do, we have something of value to offer. What we have to offer may be something we are compensated handsomely for or it may be something that we are not paid for at all. Maybe it is something that we just enjoy doing and that is payment enough.

If you are struggling in your business or in your job, maybe you should be asking yourself how you are valuable. What do you have to offer your employer that they would find of value? How can you add value to the job you are currently doing? How can you add value to your business? What about your team? What value can you add to the team?

What about your family life or other personal relationships? Are we valuable to our spouse or significant other? Do we have expectations for that value or are we able to give without expecting anything in return? What could we do to increase the value we add to the relationship? What about our parents, our kids, our friends? What can we do to add to the value we can offer?

Resolving to make your self valuable may not be easy. It may take some deep reflection. It may also take some time. Making yourself valuable should also be an ongoing process. Every day resolve to learn something new. Always work to improve yourself or your skills in some way. Over time, even small changes will result in an increase in how valuable you are.

Making yourself valuable should be part of your personal journey. While it may result in more money in your life, it may not. It should, however, contribute to your quality of life. The sense of accomplishment as well as your continued effort to improve yourself while keeping others in mind will be extremely satisfying. Never be satisfied with where you are—always look for ways to increase your value.
