When the LG Rumor first came out in 2007, it was hailed as a performance-oriented, affordable texting mobile device and carved out a reputation for itself in the market. Now, the Rumor 2 is out and the expectations are running seriously high for this new LG phone. Does it live up to the anticipation? To a large extent it does, as the improvements are numerous and they have been incorporated without disturbing its affordable appeal.
On the outside, there are distinct features from the original LG Rumor that have been retained and this might be appreciated by the Rumor 1 afficianodos. All the essentials like the 1.3 Megapixel camera along with built-in GPS and expandable micro-SD slot are there. However, the external casing now sports a much polished and formal appearance, trying to elevate the Rumor to the executive segment of the buyers. There is a retractable back plate and an additional designer plate is also offered that can be alternatively used with the plain one that is used in the original packing.
Other Features that Impress: The QWERTY keyboard welcomes you when you slide and open the phone. On the keyboard, another row has been added which makes navigating and texting very easy, even for first-time users. The numbers on the front row of the keypad are large, making them easy-to-use and the handling is further assisted by the directional ring that moves in all the four directions. It is difficult to find a phone in the price bracket that the LG Rumor 2 is positioned that offers a QVGA display. The screen resolution has been worked upon and the 2 inch QVGA delivers brilliant picture clarity. The original packing includes a very appreciable Cobra CBTH2 Bluetooth headset and the voice clarity can be counted upon but occasionally the incoming voice may not be so clear at low volume levels. All the basic call management features like the caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling and call forwarding are on offer.
Some other handy add-ons include the world clock, calendar, calculator, notepad, voice memo and a d-day counter along with the standard unit converter. The Rumor 2 also supports Picture and voice SMS messaging along with web-enabled emailing and chatting. It is compatible with all the noted service providers like Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail and AOL. In terms of playing your music, the phone can play all the usual formats of music files including MP3, AMR, WAV, MID and QCP.
Verdict: those who have been searching for a contemporarily-designed but budgeted texting phone should look no further than the LG Rumor 2. It provides many features for a reasonable price and presents itself like a new product rather than being just another upgrade.
