In times of high gas prices, and not being able to rely on someone else for your own financial security, the chance to work from home is becoming more and more appealing to many people. Being more in control of your own destiny is more comforting than being reliant on someone else that may or may not be there for you when you need them most. In the past it was hard to convince yourself about taking the work from home route, but current circumstances have shown that the security of a regular job was merely an illusion to begin with.

The fortunate thing is that the internet has brought a large number of work from home opportunities that you can get started in with very little up front investment. Many times it is possible to get started by only having to purchase a domain name, and paying for a hosting service. All of the other pieces you need to begin you can find for free.

While it is possible to run your online business for nearly nothing, if you really are serious about your work from home business, and not just looking for a little extra income, you should be prepared to spend some money along the way. After all, if you aren't serious enough about this business to invest in your success, how committed are you to it in the first place?

The first area you should consider investing in is your education. To be successful with an online business you will need to understand internet marketing. Without marketing your customers will never find you, and all of their money will end up going to your competition. While a lot of the information you need can be found for free, you better plan on spending a lot of time searching for information and re-reading the same advice over and over again. In order to speed you education along you should consider purchasing the training programs that are offered by some of the more trusted internet marketing teachers.

The next area you should consider investing in are programs that are designed to help you automate your business. There are a lot of tools available to help you with everything from maintaining your customer email list, to setting up autoresponders, to tracking how your customers browse your site. There are tools that help you submit your website to the search engines and all of the social networking sites. These last two alone can save you hours of tedious work each and every week.

Being able to work from home is a dream that more and more people are making a reality, and it can be for you too. Don't be afraid to step out and give it a try. The time may never be better.
