The weakest part of any building is usually the garage door. Unless you have a secure garage door, your home or business may not be as safe as you would like it to be. You can spend thousands of dollars for the top-of-the-line door and still have security issues however. Are cheap garage doors safe, as well? Yes, if you follow some simple guidelines when choosing which one will work for your home or business.

What Features Are Important?

You'll want to ensure that the door meets all recommended safety regulations. One of the most important safety features should be an automatic reverse feature. This means that if the door comes into contact with anything when it is going down, it will automatically reverse and go back up. There were far too many children and pets killed or seriously injured before this feature. Most cheap garage doors will have this feature today.

You'll also want to consider the stability of the garage door. Because there are so many different materials used to manufacture cheap garage doors today, you can find several that are very strong and durable. Steel panel doors are usually the strongest.

An R-value rating is what determines how well the door will protect from the elements. If you live in an area with consistently high temperatures, then a door with an R-value rating of 15 or more should be used. This is especially true if you cool or heat your garage. If you live in an area that has a milder climate, then you can get by with a rating of 6 or so. Think about what you want your garage to do. If you want to get into a nice warm car in the winter, then make sure you get a good rating for that type of temperature.

Even cheap garage doors should require little maintenance. Those made of wood may require staining and painting, while prepainted doors or artificial wood doors will look great year after year. This may not seem like it should be of much importance now, but when you're painting the door a couple of years from now, you may wish you'd have gone with a more maintenance free model.

In Closing

One of the best places to start your search for cheap garage doors is the internet. There are several websites that offer good quality doors dirt cheap. Make sure you keep in mind that shipping may be expensvie and you may have to pay someone to install it. Best of luck finding a great deal on cheap garage doors!
