Among the many questions my clients have asked me over the years, these three stand out as being the most common. Hopefully my answers will give you some ideas or at least provoke you to think about your own body and health.
Q How do you stay positive and enthusiastic about training (motivated)?
A. I will compare it to my Marriage - just because I'm not experiencing that, "loving feeling", every minute of the day, like when my Wife has just dented the car or something... it's a lifelong DECISION or COMMITMENT.
"No matter what, I will...
* Be there, look after and be committed to my wife.
* Look after, protect and be a model for my child.
* Keep fit, active, strong and as healthy as possible (partly to achieve the previous two commitments).
To run with the above example, would you run out and cheat on your Wife or Husband just because they dented the car?
So why go and stop training (throw away your sensible and rational commitment) or eating healthy just because of some short term temporary setback or incident?
Lifelong commitment or a real decision is like that isn't it?
Q. What is the fastest way to lose weight?
A. Cut a leg off! Seriously, that would get rid of a load of weight real quickly. So imagine that had just happened to you, would you be so concerned about fast weight loss then?
Ok, after that cheeky answer, I would recommend the following:
* Berries and apples (un-sweetened and as much as you like).
* Drink lots of water - 6 glasses + per day.
* Keep the carbohydrates lower Glycemic Index (low GI), so Whole-grain Pasta (not white), Brown Rice (not white) Sweet Potato (not standard types).
* Plenty of good quality protein - free range chicken, fish, turkey, lean beef.
* Avoid all pies, pork, bacon, processed stuff generally.
* Double your vegetable serving, half your carbohydrate serving on any given meal.
* Lentils and all sorts of beans are great (avoid sugared varieties).
* Portions - you can almost certainly cut in half whatever you currently dish up for yourself... try it for a day, if you actually feel genuinely hungry 20 minutes after a meal, eat a raw carrot.
* Cut out or radically restrict alcohol. Try reading Allen Carr's, "Easy Way To Control Alcohol". It worked for me!
* Put down your fork in between mouthfuls and don't pick it up until your mouth is empty!
* Did I mention that exercise is good too?
Q What is the most effective and fastest way to get fit?
There are a 100 good answers to this, so I am going to give a handful:
* Whichever one you actually DECIDE you will STICK TO for a couple of months minimum!
* Try to do something active, every day. It doesn't have to be a 6 hour mountain climb, a 5 minute dance in the photocopy cupboard with your i-pod counts as activity, and so does a half hour cycle or a 15 minute swim... you get the idea.
*Remember, it could be two or three 5 minute slots built into your day. Just don't tell me you haven't got time, be honest and say "I can't be bothered"!
* As you get into exercise you will find your own methods that will work for you, but you got to commit and jump in!
* Intervals. Short periods of high and lower intensity in whatever you are doing for exercise are a real performance booster and burn more fat as well.
If you feel that by giving you the reader lists of what you should do, I may be guilty of infantilisation - well I agree, so think up your own solutions, and get on with it!
