One of the scariest moments that people will ever have to face is the thought that you would have to face seeing your house burning. There is not only the loss of personal items, but the thought that you could lose a loved one. It is for this reason that we should be thankful for the UK fire service.

There is a wealth of history with this organization and it is believed that the first fire fighters were actually the Romans that invaded the English islands in the fifth century. As most people know, the ancient Romans were responsible for a lot of the civilizations and forms of government that we take for granted these days so it would make sense that they were organized in this regard.

When the Romans left the United Kingdom, things went downhill and there were no longer any organised bodies responsible for fire fighting.

This persisted until the eighteenth century in the period after the famous London Fire of 1666 in which so many people lost their lives and their houses. At this point there were a lot of people who criticized the lack of infrastructure in place for fighting fires and this is when moves were made to once again provide an organized service.

The nineteenth century saw the formation of various insurance companies against fires and when it became obvious that they were going to lose money thanks to the number of claims that they had to deal with, the owners soon formed various fire brigades and these were company specific. They got to the point where if a person's house did not have the company sign on it then they would simply allow it to burn. Clearly this way of operating was not sustainable.

It was about the mid eighteen hundreds when the parish system of the United Kingdom took greater control of what was going on in terms of the fire service and this is when there were various brigades formed that were responsible for certain parish areas. Ultimately this is where the modern day fire service found its origin and the introduction of steam machinery to help fight fires was a great step forward.

Now the tools that the UK fire service uses to put out fires is far more advanced but the spirit of bravery that is required has not changed in the least. There is still a lot of demand for firefighters and we have to make sure that we look after them so that they can continue to do their wonderful work.
