Accidental death attributed to handguns has fallen at a steady pace over the last several years. I believe that these rates have fallen due in large part by increased education about gun safety. Even if you are an experienced gun owner, it is always a good idea to review these important gun rules even though you have heard them many times before.

As a former police officer for many years as well as a firearms instructor I have saw firsthand the importance of firearm safety. The most important aspect of owning a firearm is the safe handling and operation of the firearm. There are many injuries and deaths every year from accidental discharge of a firearm. In this article I will detail what you should know as a responsible gun owner and to keep you and your family safe from accidents resulting from improper use of a firearm.

The first thing that you should always do when handling any firearm is to assume that firearm is loaded and to keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. Even if you are certain that the firearm is unloaded, you should treat it as if it is loaded and ready to fire.

If your firearm has a safety, you should always have the safety engaged until you are ready to fire the weapon.

Whenever you handle a firearm you should never place your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire the gun. Always keep your finger outside of the trigger guard resting along the side of the gun.

Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it. If you store your firearm loaded it is not only dangerous it is irresponsible.

Always make sure that your firearm is in good working condition. This should include regular maintenance and regular cleanings, especially after you have fired your weapon.

Make sure that you are using the correct ammo. Shooting ammo that is not made for your caliber weapon is very dangerous.

When shooting, always wear proper ear and eye protection. Guns are very loud and can easily damage your hearing. Guns also emit debris and hot gases which could damage your vision.

When a misfire happens, you should clear the gun cautiously. You should point the gun in a safe direction and remove the magazine. Next, open the breech and clear the misfired round. Make certain there is not a cartridge or some other obstruction in the barrel.

When you do fire your weapon, you must know your target as well as what is beyond your target.

And finally you never mix shooting with alcohol or drugs. Doing this is a recipe for disaster.

Following these simple guns rules will ensure that you will be a responsible gun owner and enjoy shooting activities for many years to come.
