Break-up's are never easy, and that is even more true if you have been together for a long time and feel you had met your soul mate. Often people say that you should just move on and accept the situation, but that can be difficult when hearts are involved, it's often not so easy.
A friend of mine often said that an ex is an ex for a reason and that you shouldn't travel back down an old path, but this is often easier said than done, especially if you see other couples re-uniting over problems such as infidelity, lost passion or a stolen heart and go on to live happy lives together.
This begs the question: is getting back with your ex a good idea or should you accept the situation and find love somewhere else?
To answer that question you should first look at the reasons that you broke up in the first place. Relationships break down over hundreds of different reasons and not all of them can be mended. If it is likely that the reason that you broke up will still exist if you got back together then perhaps it is time to look elsewhere.
If you are willing to change or make an effort to fix your relationship problems (assuming of course that you need to - relationships are a two-way street) then it is possible that you could get back together and be happy together.
If love still exists on both sides then there is a chance. Of course often it can be difficult to determine if your ex does still love you as you have both probably said hurtful things to each other, so this is where you should trust your instincts. Even if they say that they no longer love you, do they really mean it or are they just trying to hurt you because they are hurting themselves?
It's often a good idea to step back from the situation and try and look objectively at the way you both act around each other. In can even be a good idea to ask the advice of a good friend who is more impartial and less emotionally involved if you don't trust your own instincts.
The first steps that you take in trying to mend a broken relationship can be important in determining your success so it is important to try and keep a level head.
