How does reverse osmosis work? How many people do you think know the answer to this question? The number is surprisingly small.

Before you buy a water filter, you should try to find out how it works and if it is really as effective as you think.

Whole house reverse osmosis units, in particular, are extremely popular on the market today. It has been proven conclusively that showering in tap water is just as harmful to your health as drinking it, due to the gases that seep into your pores.

So, a good whole house filtering system is your best bet to stay away from the numerous health problems that can arise from contaminated water. The problem, however, is that most people just go with what is most popular, without doing the necessary research, and choose one of the many RO systems.

Now, let us get back to the question. How does reverse osmosis work? The way they work is quite simple. It has a semi-permeable membrane through which pressurized water is passed. Any substance that is larger than the water molecule is blocked and you get pure water. Yet there are two major disadvantages to this type of system.

1. Many of the contaminants present in tap water these days are actually smaller in size than the H2O molecule. So, they cannot be removed by this process. As a result, the water you get still has these contaminants in it after the process is completed.

2. The essential minerals present in water are larger in size than the water molecules. So, they get filtered out during this process along with the harmful contaminants That means your body isn't getting any of the important trace minerals present in water.

So, based on the two points mentioned above, I have come to the following conclusion. The water you get from a whole house reverse osmosis unit is neither purified nor healthy. Now, I have a question for you - why would you waste your money on something like that when there are better options?

If you are looking for a good water filter, find one that is based on effective purification methods such as active carbon filtration. If possible, look for one involving the processes of ion exchange and sub micron filtration as well. These methods are much more effective than reverse osmosis and can remove almost 100% of contaminants present in tap water. Moreover, they do not take out therapeutic trace minerals.

You now know the answer to the question how does reverse osmosis work. This should help you decide which type of filter is right for your family. Don't just buy what others are buying, buy a product that works the best.
