Smoking is a costly habit, and a dangerous one. Not only does it take a large percentage of your annual income, it also decreases your overall health and your life expectancy, and that of the people around you. Both lung cancer and emphysema are caused by smoking, and it can also stain your teeth and skin. It even causes you to age faster, and most people decide to stop smoking to avoid these effects. If you are thinking of giving up smoking, there is a way you can do it naturally.

Most people refer to smoking as a habit, and it is, but it's also an addiction. Nicotine excites the nerve routs in your mind, causing cravings when the level is not maintained, which ultimately leads to addiction. Since your nerves have become adjusted to nicotine and "need" it, it can be difficult to disrupt the "need" through the creation of new pathways. A serious quitter needs to be strong willed, but luckily there are ways to help you if you decide on giving up smoking.

One of the things that can help is a support group. Other ex-smokers can make quitting easier, and the group can also include non-smokers, such as family and friends. You can even seek professional help from a doctor or psychiatrist. Being accountable to another person or even a group of people can help you stay determined, and they can also provide encouragement and support if you feel that you are slipping. Don't be afraid to ask for help- it can be a difficult process.

Most ex-smokers will tell you that the best thing to do is to quit once and for all (also known as going cold turkey). Trying to wean yourself off cigarettes often only results in maintaining the addiction, even though you may smoke less in a day. Nicotine cravings will probably make you irritable for a few days, but giving up smoking cold turkey will help you to move past them faster than if you tried a gradual method.

It's important to help yourself when you decide to quit smoking. Do this by getting rid of every single cigarette, any smoking paraphernalia, and avoiding social situations where smoking will be involved. To help yourself through your cravings, you should drink a lot of water and even consider taking up exercising. You can also try other activities when you get a craving such as reading, meditation, or perhaps talking to a friend. Replacing your addiction with a new activity will take your mind off of what you are missing and instead focus it on what you are doing in its place. This can be huge.

While it can be difficult to give up smoking naturally, there's good chance you can achieve it. Rely on your friends and family or other members of your support group to help you get through the hardest parts. Remember that you are doing something that is good, not only for you, but for those around you. You will feel better, live longer, and be happier.
