Today is the day to start learning something new: How To Use Keywords

This is a New Year, and it’s the perfect time to learn a new skill that can revolutionize your website marketing!

Keyword research is absolutely vital– not just for helping determine what you want to get out of article marketing but also for significantly magnifying the results you get from it.

For the next few weeks, we’ll be doing a Keywords Tutorial on this blog, and you’ll have everything you need to get started taking your article marketing up a few notches.

I know that it’s so tempting to put the blinders on and put your article marketing campaign on auto-pilot when someone encourages you to learn a new skill that will improve your results, especially when that new skill sounds like it’s rather technical. It’s just human nature–I don’t know too many people who are overjoyed to leave their comfort zones and undertake learning a new subject.

I just want to put your mind at rest first–I am encouraging you to learn to do keyword research and to then incorporate those keywords in your article marketing campaign, but please be assured that I’m not asking you to do anything overly technical.

And here’s a little encouragement: I have worked with many people who are definitely not technically minded but who have learned how to use keywords in their articles, and the process has been painless! The trick is to take things slow…

We’re going to be covering the topics of keyword research and article marketing over the next few weeks. All of the things I’ll teach you are completely doable for the average Joe or Jane. It will just take an initial read through to get the basics in your brain, and then as you’re ready, you can look back over the information I’m going to provide you to pick up more details.

Let’s get started with just a little bit of information about what you can achieve by doing keyword research for your articles.

What Can Be Achieved With Keyword Research?

It can be amazing–you’re not just looking at a potential page one position (on Google and the other search engines) for your main keyword, but page one positions for multiple keywords that have high levels of competition that you may consider it difficult or impossible to get a high ranking for.

I’ve seen this happen many times with effective article marketing combined effective keyword research, but of course none of it can ever be guaranteed, as there are many factors in play, not the least of which if your site is genuinely about the keywords that you’re trying to rank well for, offers your visitors excellent value, and is appropriately optimized.

But presuming you’ve got the all the basics in place, article marketing can be incredibly powerful. As an example of my own experiences, I’ve had keywords where my site was not just #1 on the page, but also #2, #3 and #4 for the same keyword, effectively dominating Google for that keyword. And this isn’t just any keyword, but a highly competitive keyword that has over 400 million (yes, 400 million!) competing pages.

At the same time I’ve had numerous other high rankings on page one for other high competition keywords, each with competition levels ranging from around 8 million to nearly 60 million competing pages.

But of course, it’s not the high rankings themselves that are important; it’s the amount of traffic they can deliver to your website over the long term.

The Basics: Two Types Of Keywords

Your keyword research will mean compiling two separate lists of keywords for different purposes.

1 – Firstly, you have your main keywords.

Those are the words you want to rank well for on the search engines. These keywords tend to have high competition but also have high traffic potential. After all, presumably, that’s why you’ll be wanting to target them– to get the rewards that a high ranking in search engines can give you.

These main keywords are what you want your website to rank for in Google and the other search engines.

2 – Secondly, you’ll want to compile a list of long-tail keywords.

You can use these to optimize your articles and try to get the articles themselves ranking well on the search engines. So you’re not specifically wanting the main page of your site to rank well for these long-tail keywords.

Instead, you want the articles themselves to rank well for the long-tail terms, and you want the pages on your website to rank well for the main keywords.

Because these long-tail keywords generally have lower competition levels, it can be relatively easy to get an article ranked well. Traffic levels for each long-tail keyword tends to be relatively low, but once you have a few articles out there that are optimized and ranked well for different long-tail keywords, the traffic starts to add up; and again this is all long-term sustainable traffic that we’re talking about here.

This is all we’ll be covering today, but this is enough. All you need to know right now is what the benefits of doing keyword research are, and also the two different types of keywords. We’ll get more in depth in the coming weeks.

Questions for you:

Are you interested in learning how to use keywords in your articles and how to do keyword research?

Is there stumbling block that you see for yourself as you undertake learning this new skill?
