Article Marketing Success: 5 Tips For Generating Article Topics
Published By Google+

When you’re writing articles for article marketing, you don’t need to be a super creative writer like Hemingway or Stephen King. You can be a regular person who just has knowledge on a particular niche.

You do, however, need to be able to come up with article topics on a regular basis. No matter where you fall on the creativity scale, you will likely have some periods where you’re having trouble coming up with ideas of what to write about.

I’m telling you about this ahead of time because I’ve been through this many times before–don’t get discouraged if you suddenly can’t think of anything to write about. If you’ve written before, you can write again. It’s not a permanent condition to come up dry when trying to think of what to write.

There are some little tricks you can do to get your mind churning out writing ideas again. Here are 5 of my faves:

1 – Dictate some ideas into a tape recorder.

Feel like you’re burnt out on writing? Then try speaking your article, rather than writing it down. Just talk into a recorder and speak about your niche. You may notice some more specific topics coming up. Then, replay what you’ve said, and take some notes. You may notice that articles that you’ve started with a tape recorder end up with a different tone of voice, a more relaxed style, and that can really inspire you.

2 – Put yourself in your reader’s shoes.

Remember what it was like when you were first starting out and you didn’t know very much about your niche. There were a lot of things that confused you and a lot of things that frustrated you. Think of yourself as a helpful guide to others who are walking the path you’ve already walked, and make it your goal to make their path easier.

3 – Tackle something that confuses you in your niche, then write an article teaching others how to do what you just learned how to do.

If you feel frustrated or stuck in a rut with your writing, one sure way to recover your creativity is to stretch yourself –go out of your comfort zone. Exert the energy needed to expand your knowledge of your niche and learn something new.

4 – Do keyword research.

It’s really simple–just go to Google’s free keyword research tool .

Type in a phrase related to your niche, then see what comes up.

The results list that you will see contains actual phrases that people are typing into Google. Most likely you will be surprised by some of the things that people are searching for related to your niche.

Look for phrases that are 3-5 words long or a little longer. These are called long-tail keyword phrases, and they’re great for using as article topics. Sometimes a long tail keyword phrase will be perfect as a title, for example: How To House Train A Dog.

Other times you may need to tweak it a bit to make it work as a title.

5 – Write long hand.

We’re so used to typing on a computer keyboard that we can forget that there are other options. Back in the olden days, writing by hand was the only way to go. There are some perks about writing with an actual pen and paper:

  • You can write from anywhere. You can write outside, in any room of your house, on a plane, in a car, in a library. Wherever you go, you can write. Sometimes changing the location of where you write can help get your mind out of a rut.
  • You can write at any time, immediately. There’s no laptop to lug around, and you don’t need to turn anything on. Writing by hand is also great for jotting down notes and doing a rough draft.
  • When you write by long hand, you are using a different part of your brain than you normally would if you were typing. This change can help with your creativity.

If you need to write articles and you’re “just not feelin’ it”, don’t panic. Getting in the mood to write can take some finesse. Try these 5 tips for generating article ideas and the 5 tips we covered the other day for getting your creative juices flowing.

Great post! I’ve had many a moment where I feel like my brain is tapped out. I’ll scour niche related magazines and yahoo answers for ideas. And so true–I always find myself doing better with my hand and not a keyboard! lol :)
