Article Marketing Tips: How To Use Article Marketing To Get People To Sign Up For Your Newsletter
Published By Google+

In the online world, a business owner’s “list” is like gold.

I’m talking about a list of newsletter subscribers–people who are interested enough in what you’re offering that they have given you special permission to send them information directly to their email inbox.

This is a huge privilege–it’s sort of like someone inviting you from the front porch into their kitchen to share tea and cake and conversation.

The relationship you have with your list subscribers is more intimate than the one you have with your website visitors. It’s like you’ve both expressed an interest to sit down and get to know each other better.

But how do you get to the point where someone wants to sign up for your newsletter list?

Article marketing is extremely effective at warming up a relationship with a potential subscriber. When someone sees one of your articles, they get a good sample of:

  • your level of knowledge on your topic
  • your ability to teach them
  • your interest in helping them
  • the subject matter that you cover
  • your personality

Then you can use your resource box to draw them in closer, offering an incentive for going to your website.

How can you use your resource box to motivate people to sign up to your list?

You can learn something from what offline businesses do to entice YOU to sign up to their lists.

I was thinking about this recently, and I noticed that several times within the span of about a month, I had willingly (and almost eagerly) gone to a business’ website with the intention of getting on their email list.

Why would I do such a thing? What made me so eager to go out of my way to look up the website and seek out the newsletter list sign up page?

Here were the different scenarios, and you’ll notice that they have something in common:

1- The first business was a restaurant that offered me a gift certificate as a welcome to their mailing list.

2 – The second was a local business that promised to send some special offers (I’m imagining coupons and such).

3 – A third was actually a shoe store that offered credits for each dollar purchased. They promised  a significant number of bonus credits if I would sign up to their email list.

Offline businesses use incentives to build their email lists. How? They’ll often give you an offer so good you can’t refuse to sign up to their list, like “sign up to our email list and get $10 off your next meal at our restaurant.”

Or “sign up to our email list, and you’ll get a free appetizer at your next visit.”

Or “sign up to receive our newsletter, and each week you’ll have a chance to win a $50 gift card to our store”.

Online businesses use incentives to attract subscribers too. Whatever your incentive is (a free e-book, a newsletter, a free report, etc), receiving the promised incentive will involve signing up to your email list.

So, here are the steps for using article marketing to build your list:

1- First, write an article that teaches your target readers information that will improve their lives. Whatever you teach will be related to your niche.

2 – Come up with a compelling incentive–a free gift or something–that you can offer to readers.

3 -Â Set up your website so that you can to capture email addresses (this is how you build your list).

Ensure you have some form of email capture on the page you’re linking to, and then people will sign up to your email list in order to claim the free gift you’re offering.

4 – Then, create a resource box that has your name, a brief bio, the incentive for visiting your site and a link to the email capture page where people can sign up to your list to get the free gift.

What about you?

What is your most effective incentive for enticing people to sign up to your email list?

If you don’t have an incentive already, has this post helped you come up with some possible ideas? What are they?

I have not been involved in e-mail marketing (lists) but this idea of getting people to sign up to your list through article marketing is quite ingenious. Would it not be better to mention your offer and get a text link to your site for a keyword you`re trying to rank for? If they`re interested they can follow your link to your site and then see the offer they were looking for.

What if it were a site offering information only? What sort of incentives could that site offer to persons signing up for their newsletter?

    @Leena: Hi Leena,

I would do a free e-book or report or perhaps an e-course.

    Hope that helps!

    @Mark Demers: Hi Mark,

Yes, that would be part of the HTML resource box, which I recommend using. By hyperlinking the anchor text (which would be your keyword phrase), it helps the search engines to associate your site with that phrase, and it can help you site to be ranked higher for that phrase. Be careful not to use the same phrase each time though, as that can have negative SEO consequences.

  5. Hello from Montana,

I offer a free eBook called “Use Encouraging Words” when people opt-in (sign up) at

Recently, I was asked to be interviewed on an national radio show. When I asked how she had found me, she said she had read the free e-book!

The free ebook was created using three articles. Many people are intimidated by the idea of a “book.” Don’t be. Just hook your articles together.

Thank you Steve. I did think of an e-book, but not a report. The e-course is a fabulous idea too!

Thanks to Judy as well for the encouraging comment.
