17 Common Article Marketing Mistakes (And How To Avoid Them)

17 Common Article Marketing Mistakes (And How To Avoid Them)

Because we are all human, it’s inevitable that every person who does article marketing will screw up every once in a while. In coming up with this list of common article marketing mistakes, for a good many of them I simply thought back on my own innocent blunders as I was getting started. Because I read so many articles each day, I also get a daily reminder of the kinds of things that trip up a lot of people.

When I see people making these mistakes, I empathize. I’ve been there too!

There are two major perks to making mistakes–if you learn from them you get better at what you do, and you can also pass on your hard won knowledge to others so that they don’t have to walk the crooked path that you stumbled down. That is what I’m hoping to do with this next series of posts– I want you to learn from my mistakes and from the mistakes of many before you.

Article Writing Tips: How To Write An Article That Solves A Small Problem (And Makes A Big Difference!)

Article Writing Tips: How To Write An Article That Solves A Small Problem (And Makes A Big Difference!)

Your first order of business when writing an article is to select a topic. All of the articles that you write will be related to the topic of your website. For example, if you’re an accountant, then the general topic of your website is “accounting” and all of your articles will be about some aspect of accounting. If your website is a collection of chocolate recipes, then all of your articles will be about chocolate in some way. You get the idea…

But how can you figure out a specific topic to cover in your article?

There are tons of things you could write about, so how do you choose?

New To Writing Articles? 8 Steps For Writing Your First Free Reprint Article (It’s A No-Brainer!)

New To Writing Articles? 8 Steps For Writing Your First Free Reprint Article (It’s A No-Brainer!)

I once heard a wise person say that you can accomplish any challenge, as long as you break it down into small enough steps.

That advice made sense to me and gave me new hope for accomplishing some things that I had been putting off (and dreading) doing. So often we’re faced with doing things that we’re not used to doing, and we never begin because we feel so overwhelmed from the onset. I know it’s that way for some of you who are just starting to write articles for article marketing.

You may have never written an article before in your life. Perhaps the last time you wrote anything more formal than an email was when you were in school. Today I’m hoping to break down the challenge of writing your first article into small steps.

Each step builds on the others before it, and by doing each one of these very small steps you will end up with a finished piece of content that you can submit as a free reprint article.

Is Your Article Topic New To You? How To Write About An Unfamiliar Topic (4 Tips!)

Is Your Article Topic New To You? How To Write About An Unfamiliar Topic (4 Tips!)

Here was a question I received from a reader:

What about some advice for someone like me who has just landed a marketing job where she doesn’t know much about the product?  I’ve been used to writing articles on finance. Now I’m with a company that sells photography equipment, but chiefly digital memory. I’m not a photographer, and there’s a limit to what you can say about digital memory. So far I’ve been limited to committing the cardinal sins of pushing products and bringing up the company. I want to sign up for SubmitYourArticle.com, but with so little to write about so far, I’m stuck. Hayulp!

I’m so glad that you asked me this. So often we imagine that people who are writing free reprint articles know their topics inside and out, but there is also a good number of people who have the challenge of writing on topics that they’re totally unfamiliar with. Today I’ll give some tips for writing articles on hard or unfamiliar topics:

Creating Memorable Articles: 5 More Tips For Writing Stand-Out Content (Reader Feedback!)

Creating Memorable Articles: 5 More Tips For Writing Stand-Out Content (Reader Feedback!)

A couple weeks ago, many of you were gracious enough to respond to my request for your feedback on what you think makes a great article. I think it’s so helpful to change our perspective from the usual one of the writer and to step back now and again to remember what it feels like to be a reader.

Are we creating articles that we would be attracted to if we were searching for information on our topic? It’s a question that makes you say, “Hmm…” and start to see the content you produce from a different point of view.

I picked out 10 major points from the feedback that you provided about what you think makes a great article, and last time we covered the first 5 points. As a recap, the first 5 tips we covered last time were:

1 – The Article Should Provide Practical, Useful Information That Will Improve The Life Of The Reader In Some Way.

2 – The Article Is Not Too Long And Is Easy To Read.

3 – The Writing Reveals The Personality Or Feelings Of The Writer (Depending On The Topic).

4 – The Article Should Provide Explicit And Strong Instructions On How The Teaching In The Article Can Be Applied To The Reader’s Life.

5 – The Article Needs To Have A Catchy Title That Clearly Pertains To An Area Of Interest Of The Reader.

Now, let’s take a look at the rest of the tips that YOU came up with (which I heartily agree with!):

WritingA big “thank you” to everyone who provided feedback on my question about “What Do YOU Think Makes A Great Article?

Make your articles easy to read

Believe it or not, the way you present the information in your article makes a big difference in how many people read your article and how easily they can absorb the information.

After being roped in by your title, most people will take an initial glance at your article and make the decision to read it or not based on how the article looks–how it is arranged and formatted. Is that surprising? It was to me the first time I learned it.

I used to think it was all about information, but actually it’s about information and presentation.

When writing free reprint articles, here are 3 presentation tips that have the best chance of attracting readers:

Reader Survey: What Do YOU Think Makes A Great Article?

What makes a great article? We can get so used to thinking about creating content from the author’s perspective that we forget how readers feel when they are looking at our articles. For a moment, I’d like you to forget about writing articles and just think about how you feel when you’re reading them.

Writing Headlines: 3 Quick Tips For Writing Article Titles (Plus Bonus Tips!)

Writing Headlines: 3 Quick Tips For Writing Article Titles (Plus Bonus Tips!)

Reel in readers with a great title

Reel in readers with a great title

Your title is one of the shortest parts of your article submission, but it’s the one thing that will reel in readers and get them to read your article.

Here are 3 quick title tips (plus a few bonus tips):

1 – Write your article title first.Â

I know a lot of folks who write the article and then come up with a title as the last course of business. If that is what you normally do, I encourage you to reverse your process.

Why? When you sit down to write your article, you have an idea of what you’ll be writing about. By creating the title first, you’ll also be explicitly stating the promise that your article will fulfill. This will help you to write a more focused article–if you know what the main point you’re going for in the article, it will direct all of the things you choose to include in the content.

This is a lot easier than writing the article first and then trying to backtrack and extract a purpose or promise from the already written article to highlight in the title.

Write Better Titles: 6 Questions To Help You Write Better Titles (Easy Fixes!)

Write Better Titles: 6 Questions To Help You Write Better Titles (Easy Fixes!)

Can better news headlines help you write better article titles?

Can better news headlines help you write better article titles?

The title (or headline) of your article will be the first thing that catches your reader’s eye and makes him or her want to read your article. If your title doesn’t intrigue the reader, then your article will be bypassed, no matter how well-written the rest of it is. It’s worth it to take some time to experiment with writing better article titles.

I ran across a great post by Matt Thompson about 10 Questions To Help You Write Better Headlines, and I thought it was intriguing. While Matt was talking about news headlines, with some tweaking some of the same concepts can apply to writing headlines for free reprint articles. Here are some of the ones that I’ve picked out of Matt’s article and adapted for article marketing:
