As you may realize by now, Article Marketing is one of the simplest most effective tools for marketing a site, and in this post I want to give you a ‘get back to basics’ guide to article marketing:

What is Article Marketing?

Article marketing works by creating a win-win situation where:

  • Publishers get free content for their website(s) or ezine(s)
  • Authors provide that content in the form of ‘free reprint articles’

Free reprint articles:

  • Are educational articles written for the target readers of the author.
  • Include a short author bio, including a link back to the author’s website. This author bio area is commonly known as the resource box.


What is involved in doing Article Marketing?

It’s simple enough–just write articles on your topic and submit them to article directories. Do this consistently, several times a month (submitting about 8 articles a month per website is sufficient).

For each article, include a resource box. This resource box (or author bio) should include your name, a brief bio, an incentive to go to your website, and your website address (your website URL).

When you write articles, the aim is to teach the members of your target market something about your field.

Think of yourself as a teacher, rather than a sales person. In the article you will teach, but in the resource box you can promote yourself, your business and your website.

Why Do Article Marketing?

The main reason authors/website owners submit free reprint articles is for the clickable link in the resource box.

What’s so special about that link?

1) You can get traffic directly from the article, when someone clicks the link in the resource box.

People who are clicking the link in your resource box have read your article, are interested in your topic, and are also interested in exploring the topic more (that is why they are clicking your link).

So, these types of people are very interested in your topic. On top of that, they have already read your article, and you have already started to build a certain level of trust and confidence in your expertise and abilities.

They are ‘warm leads’–barriers have already started to be broken down, trust is building, and they are interested in your topic. Warm leads are easier to convert to sales.

2) You can get traffic indirectly–the increasing number of links to your website from your article submissions helps boost your search engine ranking for your keywords. A higher ranking in the search engines produces more traffic.

People who are finding you through search engines have searched for keywords related to your business and found your site as a result. They are highly targeted because they are interested in your field and are seeking out information.

You’ve probably already figured this out–having a website is not enough. You need to draw in traffic by building links to your website. Whether the traffic comes indirectly or directly as a result of your article submissions, it is highly targeted, which is what you’re after!

Advantages and Expectations

Article marketing is a time tested and perennial favorite marketing tool that regular everyday people can use to build traffic to their websites.

Virtually anyone can do article marketing–if you can write a letter, then you can write an article and submit it.

There is no need to pay thousands of dollars to an SEO (search engine optimization) expert to get a higher search ranking–if you will consistently submit quality articles on the topic of your website and stick with it over the long term, you can reach your goals.

I just want to be clear on what you can expect–some people see initial results immediately, but by and large you will need to submit articles over the long term before seeing the dramatic results you’re looking for.

Many amateurs quickly become disillusioned with article marketing when they don’t see immediate results, and then they end up giving up on the strategy early on. This is good news for those who are prepared for a longer commitment to reap the benefits–less competition!
