How To Submit Articles: What Should An Article Look Like?

If you’re completely new in learning how to submit articles, it will help you tremendously just to look around our article directory [1]. Just seeing the types of articles that other authors are getting published will give you a good idea of how to do your own first articles.

I think it’s a confidence builder too–when you’re doing a new activity, it really helps to see others doing it who are more experienced. Sometimes that helps better than someone telling you step-by-step what to do.

Everyone has a way of learning that works best for them. For those of you who learn better with a “guided tour” type approach, that’s what I’d like to give you in this post.

I’m going to give you a tour of one of my articles so that you can see the different parts and use that info in creating your own articles.

You’ll notice a few common characteristic of free reprint articles:

  • The title at the top
  • The author name – it helps to keep in mind that not every site will publish the author name, so if you would like for your author name to be associated with your article, then be sure to include it in your resource box.
  • The article body
  • The resource box at the bottom of the article with links back to my website

5 Content Production Guidelines

1 – The word count on your articles should generally be 400-800 words.

Technically, your articles can be up to 1500 words, but when you have an article over 800 words you will limit the number of publishers who are interested in reprinting (especially for ezine publishers, where email length is important)

2 – Articles should be informational, rather than promotional (sales oriented).

Your article topics should teach valuable information on your general niche, rather than talk about your own business, website, products or services.

The resource box (author bio) is the place for you to talk about yourself and your business/website. If you try to do give that type of information in the article body, then you’ll run into a lot of issues and get minimal results (if any).

Article marketing is a give and take relationship–the article is where you “give”, and the resource box is where you “take”.

3 – Your content should read well and be free of spelling mistakes.

Be sure to proofread your article thoroughly before submitting it!

4 – Your article should reflect the niche of the website you are linking to in the resource box.

So whatever topic your website is on, that is the same general topic that your articles should be about. To clarify–articles should be about your general niche, not your specific website or business.

The reason for this is that you want to attract potential prospects to your website via this article, as well as giving search engines relevant context for the link going back to your site. There’s no point in writing about ballroom dancing when your site is about motorcycles–you’ll attract readers who aren’t interested in your website, which isn’t much use to you.

5 – Generally, you should not include links or URLs within your article itself.

Publishers don’t like them as they’ll already be linking out via the resource box.

There is an exception to this rule though: If you are incorporating links using the Naked Articles [5] feature at SubmitYOURArticle.com for when your content is published on blogs. Such links will not be ordinarily displayed, but will be used when your content is published on niche-relevant blogs, giving you super powerful links back to your website.

Submitting articles is pretty straightforward–I think you’ll catch on very quickly after looking at some other people’s articles and if you’ll keep these 5 guidelines in mind. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
