How To Submit Articles: Writing Tips For Beginners
Published By Google+

We’re in the middle of a series of articles for beginners.

We’ve started from scratch, first explaining why article marketing is the perfect marketing tool for people of any skill level, then covering some ideas for pumping up your website content (no point in directing people to a site that doesn’t have valuable content waiting for them), and now you’re about to enter the main arena:

Writing articles!

I know it can be intimidating. It can be overwhelming to face a blank page and then think that you are writing something that will be republished all over the internet. It can be overwhelming to think that you need to write a certain quantity of articles by a certain date.

What I really recommend for beginners is:

1 – Take a deep breath.

2 – Exhale.

3 – Relax. Don’t think about writing 8 articles on the first day. Just work on writing one article.

Some tips:

  • Don’t try to finish the article in one day. Just write some basic ideas down, put the article aside, and then come back to it tomorrow. When you write articles, you’ll be writing a first draft, second draft, etc. You will work on the article a few times before you have a finished product.
  • When you write your first draft, don’t worry about mistakes. You will be proofreading your article to be sure that it’s free of grammar and spelling errors, but if you try to do that on the first draft, it’s going to slow you down unnecessarily. On your first draft, you’re just getting ideas down.
  • It will take you longer to write your first articles. This is because you’re not used to doing this. Be patient with yourself–no matter what new skill you undertake, it’s always harder at the beginning. Once you get used to it things will become easier.
  • Don’t rush or be overeager to get the article submitted. One of the very crucial steps in the article writing process is the final proofreading. Go through the steps of writing the article (1st draft, 2nd draft, final draft). Then put the article away for at least 24 hours and forget about it. Then, take a final look at the article and read it carefully for any issues.
  • Read the article backward. Huh? Yes, this is a proofreading technique that helps highlight errors that you would otherwise miss because you’ve read your article so many times. Start with the last sentence in the article. Read it. Then move to the second to the last sentence, then the third to last sentence, and so on.

What should you write about?

I know the hardest part is coming up with a topic, so I’ll give you a suggestion of what to write about for your first article:

You can make this a “Beginner’s Guide” to your topic. Just write an article that gives a bird’s eye overview of your topic, whatever it is. In my case, I could write an article called “The Beginner’s Guide To Article Marketing”.

If you were a real estate agent, you could write an article called “The Beginner’s Guide To Selling Your House”.

If your website was about mountain biking, your article could be “Mountain Biking 101: A Beginner’s Guide”

You get the idea…

Your articles should be educating your readers about your niche (rather than about your business or products) and/or teaching them how to do something related to your niche.

Submitting Your Articles…

After you write your article, the next step is submitting it to publishers. You’re probably wondering where you should submit your articles, and what are the different types of publishers. We’ll cover that in the next post…

Beginners, let me ask you…

I’d love to hear from some folks who are new to writing articles:

  • What is the biggest challenge you’re facing in getting started writing articles for article marketing?
  • What bit of info has been the biggest help/encouragement to you as you’re getting started?

If you’re past the beginner stage, think back to when you were first starting out. What advise would you give to a newbie?
