Mark Twain’s Guide To Article Marketing
Published By Google+

I remember when I was in high school Mark Twain’s book Roughing It was required reading. Unfortunately I put off reading the book until the last minute–the weekend before I would be tested on it.

Also unfortunately, when I found the book I realized that it was a biggie–almost 600 pages. Oh my. I was in for a long weekend.

I settled into it on a Friday night. Much to my surprise, I could not put the book down! I was also laughing out loud and enjoying it so much that I wanted to go back and reread sections (but I didn’t have time for that!).

At the end, I really regretted that I hadn’t start earlier so that I could take my time and enjoy this entertaining book.

I love Mark Twain–he has a wonderfully colourful and humourous way of expressing things. He’s also known for his famous one liners and for giving sage advice.

What kind of advice would Mark Twain give to a budding article marketer?

If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.

This is a great productivity principle–do the hardest task of your day first thing in the morning. For many people, writing articles is the “big frog” on their to-do list. Listen to Mark Twain–it’s best to write articles first thing in the morning and to tackle your hardest tasks first.

A round man cannot be expected to fit in a square hole right away. He must have time to modify his shape.

There is a period of acclimation when you jump into the article marketing pool. There is a lot going on around you that you’re just not familiar with. There are new concepts, and of course there’s the task of learning how to write a free reprint article.

You’ve got to give yourself time to adjust. Like the round man, you must have time to modify your shape. Be patient with yourself!

All you need is ignorance and confidence and success is sure.

There are some people who are very knowledgeable about SEO and online marketing, but I’ve noticed that they often don’t do as well as the average Joe who is coming at article marketing with a clean slate and the determination to stick with it. Consistency is the key with article marketing success. You don’t need to be an internet mastermind.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

How can an article marketer do right? Always write with your readers in mind. Always make it your goal to produce quality content. There are oodles of people out there who are just publishing content to get a backlink and just doing the bare minimum to get an article published. If you focus on writing quality articles and giving more than people expect, you will gratify your readers, and it will pay off in Google.

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

Website marketing makes the website. People who do nothing to market their websites have little or no influence on Google or the readers in their niche.

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.

Lots of times we don’t undertake a new activity because we’re afraid we won’t do it right, we won’t understand it, we won’t have the success that we see others having. We can let fear of starting something new control us. It really does take courage to learn a new skill, such as article marketing.

Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain.

You can conquer whatever fear you have of starting to write and submit articles by just doing it one time. The moment you start doing the thing you fear or dread, the dreaded thing loses its power.

Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.

Some people are so used to being experts in their field that they feel very uncomfortable becoming a student again when they begin marketing with articles. They get frustrated when concepts arise that are over their heads (concepts like “keywords”, search engine rankings, etc). It always helps to have the attitude of a child and not to be afraid to be a beginner.

Good breeding consists in concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other person.

In the same way, a good article should focus on the needs of the reader rather than being about the author. In the article marketing niche, we call articles that focus on the author’s needs “promotional”. Your goal as an author is to not think so much about yourself. In the article, show your “good breeding” by focusing on the reader. In the resource box, you can focus on you.

It’s amazing how Mark Twain’s advice has transcended time and is even applicable to article marketing.

If you want to write an article for your niche in this style, it’s quite fun and I encourage you to try it. Just think of one of your favorite historical figures, and then research some of their famous quotes. Then, apply their advice to your niche.
