I received this question from a reader recently:

Instead of giving my articles widespread distribution, I’d rather just log into the top 5 article directories and do manual submissions for sites that have high PR. That seems to be the most logical thing to do. What do you think?

With regard to your article distribution, I think there may be some misunderstanding. You really want to get your articles on as many sites and on as many different types of sites as possible for a few different reasons:

1 – You need to generate links from a variety of types of sites.

One of the things that Google and other search engines look for is a varied link profile. What is a “varied link profile”? It means that having all your links come from one type of site – eg. links just from article directories – is going to look increasingly suspect to search engines.

You can certainly get a varied link profile through (we submit articles to publishers with several different types of websites), and it should be an essential part of any link building strategy

2 – PageRank (PR) is not everything.

PageRank is only a small part of the SEO picture. There are many times when the top ranking web page for a very popular keyword term has a lower PR than web pages ranked below it. Likewise, getting your articles on a site with high PR does not necessarily mean that your own website benefits more than it would from a smaller website.

Another thing to keep in mind is that PageRank is always in flux, and it can go up (or down). If a site has a low PR right now, that doesn’t mean it will always have that same PR. As the site grows, it can become more powerful.

3 – You can get website visitors directly from your articles.

Search traffic is not the only type of traffic you can get from your articles. You can also get traffic directly from the article page. Even if a site has say, 50 visitors a day, and if even just a few of those people read your article and end up visiting your website, it’s a benefit to your cause.

Imagine if this smaller site is especially niche focused–you can end up with more visitors coming from that little site than from one of the biggies where there is a lot more competition and where it has many different topics.

Big tip: Don’t undervalue getting your article published on a smaller website.

Here are three things to focus on in order to make article marketing work for you:

* Give your content as wide a distribution as possible to a quality and diverse distribution network such as that provided by – rather than just a handful of article directories.

* Ensure your content is high quality, gives real value to your readership, and is in line with what potential publishers in your niche may be looking for.

* Work on building up the value of your own site. In order to get a higher website ranking, your website needs to offer value to readers. Marketing in itself is not enough to get a higher ranking if your site is lacking in helpful content. One way to increase the value of your site is to incorporate a blog on your site which you update regularly with educational information on your niche.
