The 3 *BIG* Reasons Why Small Business Owners Use Article Marketing

That's an excellent question, and the answer probably has more depth than most people are expecting.

You see, even if your small business is in the "real world" ;-) and not entirely online, you need to accomplish a few objectives internet-wise in order to take advantage of all the marketing opportunities that the web offers.

Small business owners use article marketing for 3 main reasons:

1) To build inbound links to your website.

With each article that you submit, you will include a resource box, which is the one spot where you get to talk about yourself, your business, and give a link back to your website. That link that appears in your resource box is extremely valuable!

The inbound links will improve your search engine ranking, which will then, in turn bring you even more traffic.

Aside from the SEO benefits, the links also create increased opportunities for direct click-throughs. This means that every time someone sees your article on a website, it is another chance that they will click the link in your resource box and be lead back to your website–which is what you want! :-)

2) To get the word out about your website, bringing widespread exposure and an increase in long term targeted traffic.

Most business owners have a website, but what is the point of having a website is no one knows about it?!

We have all been there–you created this great website and you sit and twiddle your thumbs for a while wondering, "Alright, now what am I supposed to do? How do I get people to come here?"

Your website is the representation of your business on the web, and like any business you need to market it in order to get attention.  Article marketing is a great way to market a website and get widespread exposure.

Again, it all goes back to that resource box that sits below your article. By writing articles that have widespread distribution and that include your name and a link back to your website in the resource box, you can draw in targeted traffic.

Why does article marketing bring in targeted traffic?

Because people who are clicking through will do so because they found your article helpful. Your articles should always be on the same topic as your website, so that when someone reads your article, and then looks at what you say in your resource box, they'll be inspired to click through.

3) To establish yourself as an expert in your niche.

When a customer is thinking about using your services, they are likely to do a Google search on your name. If you've been doing article marketing, when they search for your name a list of your articles will come up, and they will get a great idea of your expertise in your business. This also builds customer confidence!

This is another great reason why you want to be absolutely sure that your articles are of the highest quality and are written with your target market in mind.

Remember, you are not trying to sell anything or convince folks to visit your website in your article. The way you lure traffic back to your website is by creating a helpful article and writing a great resource box that inspires folks to click!

So, small business owners use article marketing to increase their web presence, to help bolster their website's rankings in the search engines, to establish themselves as an expert in their niche, and also to generate more targeted traffic to their website.

These 3 objectives are HUGE when it comes to establishing a web presence and drawing traffic to your website.

Article marketing and submission is certainly a profitable opportunity to drive traffic to your web site for the reasons you highlight.

Together with focussed organic search optimisation and other traffic generating methods such as blogs, video publishing on YouTube and similar it is one of the options in an overall marketing mix not to be overlooked.

Quick question: What would be the problem in using your article to drive traffic to your site? On one hand if you basically say, “Go to my site” without giving any valuable information, I can see that as a definite mistake. Do you think even if you give valuable information first that trying to drive them to your site is not a good idea?

Editor’s reply:

Thank you for your question– There is no problem with using article marketing to drive traffic to your site–that is one of the 3 reasons listed here as to why people use article marketing :-)

But, if your question is “can use my article itself to link to my site” then the answer is different–you cannot mention your own site, services, business, products or affiliate products in your article body as that would be considered promotional or self-serving.

Your author resource box is the appropriate place to toot your own horn :-) The resource box appears below your article, and that is the place where you focus on driving traffic to your site.

So, save the promotional info for your resource box and only put educational info (not about yourself or your site) in your article.

I used article marketing for over a year and stopped because I was only getting 10-20 opt-ins a month. I didn’t get any opt-ins from articles after I stopped. I read your article and started using articles again. Guess what I now get people going to my blog from articles. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks Steve for sharing that advice.

Article marketing seems to be an important way to make you stand out in a crowded field.

I liked your suggestion about the resource box but was wondering if having too many links could become problematic?

Hi Stew,

Yes, having too many links would be problematic–I recommend using a single link in your resource box. You have a limited number of characters to work with in your resource box, so you don’t really have space to convince folks to go to multiple sites.

But, there is a way that you can drive traffic to multiple sites with just one article…

When you’re using the article submission service SubmitYOURArticle.com, you could use our ArticleLeverage tool to create multiple resource boxes linking to different sites (provided all the sites you’re trying to drive traffic to are on the same topic). That way, with one article you could effectively drive traffic to 2,3,4,5 or more sites, all while still using a single link in the resource box.

Here is a post on how to accomplish this:
