These are comments from just a few of our clients.
While we attempted to quite honestly limit our client base in order to maintain the effectiveness of article marketing for our existing clients, various copycat services began to spring up (not to mention new and alternative pieces of software, still claiming to automate the process, but in reality just helping a bit), and this ultimately led to a huge wave of article marketing.
Fortunately for our clients, this meant not just a huge number of new people submitting articles, but also large numbers of people setting up article directories to take advantage of all the content that was now so freely available. For example, SEs would now be far more likely to display the same content from different sites for the same user query, which wouldn't make them too popular with their users - which is after all who they serve.
Really, one page with the new content on was enough, most of the other pages could be relegated to a supplemental index, with any Page Rank removed.
And this is exactly what they did.
From their point of view, it makes sense doesn't it?
But it meant the other pages displaying the same content lost value (most of the time their Page Rank would be zero), and so the link back to the author's site lost value too.
For example, check out an article I submitted through SubmitYOURArticle.com back in 2005 (yes, I do use the service myself!), titled "The WRONG Way To WRITE Articles".
A popular article, it has been read on this site alone 37922 times!
And these statistics reflect our own article directory only - it doesn't take into account how often the article has been read on the hundreds of other web sites it appears on.
Let's look at some research I did with this example article.
I searched for the title in Google (in quotes), and right at the top of the results was the page where it appears in the SubmitYOURArticle.com article directory. Search engine results are always changing of course, so here's how it looked at the time of writing:

Now, this page (see for yourself) has a Page Rank of 3 - at the time of writing, of course - highly respectable for a free reprint article page
(I'll show a page on a different site with an ever higher page rank shortly).
But if you examine the rest of the listings, most of the other pages displaying the same content have a Page Rank of ... 0. Yes, a big fat ZERO. Which means the link from those pages to my site have minimal value too in terms of search engine listings.
Let's search for another - "15 Ways To Read An RSS Feed".
The first page to come up on Google (at the time of writing) is:

This page has an even higher Page Rank of 5, possibly because the article, and more specifically this page, has been in circulation longer.
(Note how article marketing has to be a long term game, if you want to realize its full potential. This is not a quick-fix solution for short-term web sites, but a long-term strategy for real online businesses who want to get ahead of the pack.)
Again, the other pages listed have zero Page Rank.
This, my friend, is duplicate content detection at work.
By the way, this doesn't mean that article submissions are no longer effective, far from it - search engines are just part of the story, although some marketers have you believe they are the be-all and end-all of all online marketing.
Thousands of readers still find and read articles on hundreds of different web sites, and click-through via the resource box on a daily basis via a myriad of other ways too - I know this from personal experience, and the continuing positive experiences of my clients.
